It’s time to channel some self-love and positivity.

As Humber College and UofGH’s first mostly-back-to-campus semester starts, everyone is raring to go (we’ve been cooped up for over a year, after all). So, there’s no better time to become the main character of your own life.

Here are some tips to help you embody this uplifting TikTok trend this year:

Play your movie soundtrack

You know the one.

Start with that song you always blast on the speaker when no one is around. Or, imagine what song would play if you were to drive a vintage Cadillac off into the sunset. “Stayin’ Alive,” “I Will Survive,” and “I Want to Break Free” are some of our recommendations to give you a boost of energy.

After all, music always helps set the right tone.

Wear what you want – boldly

That outfit you’ve been waiting for an occasion to wear? Well, dig it out of the closet because the occasion is now.

If you have a favourite scent that will set the right vibe for today’s chapter of your life, then pair your look with that too! Don’t be afraid to stand out a little; stride into your second act (or class) with confidence.

See it, like it, want it, get it (on a student budget)

OK, so we can’t all be Ariana Grande and shower ourselves with everything we want. But you can treat yourself in little ways.

Show yourself some love in between studying and your part-time job. Try a new and exciting drink instead of your usual coffee order, start the first page of a fresh journal that will house your debut novel or enjoy a warm bowl of specialty ramen while listening to the rain pour outside.

Ordinary acts can be extraordinary.

Take control of your narrative

It’s main character time – so fill your life with experiences. Go on impulsive adventures and find cute secret parks, niche quiet coffee shops and hidden gem thrift stores. Join that club you’ve been thinking about because it’s the start of something new and exciting.

Or, if you’re interested in some quiet time to reminisce, while also trying something new, enjoy a walk through the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). It may just help you get inspired to create your own work. And if not, you can simply reflect and enjoy the moment.

The AGO’s collection galleries are free every Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. Additionally, the AGO collection and exhibits are free for individuals under 25 all the time via the free annual pass!

Change your perspective

As the main character, the storyline won’t always go your way (otherwise there wouldn’t be a movie!)

But being optimistic about your uphill journeys makes the narrative more intriguing. Being a student is tough – so channel your main character energy to look on the bright side or vent it out like in the movies.

Unexpected downpour? Release that emotional buildup and let the rain wash it away. You decide if that company passing on your resume just means you’ll be open to bigger and better things ahead. You can shape your narrative as a student and as the main character simultaneously.

However, even the main-est of characters are sometimes faced with battles they can’t handle on their own.

Luckily, you can book a free, confidential virtual counselling session at any time through Humber’s Student Wellness and Accessibility Centre (SWAC). Its mental health professionals will equip you with practical strategies you can use to mitigate difficulties both in and outside of the classroom.
