LEADERSHIP & ADVOCACY
Need or Greed Campaign
The Need or Greed campaign was an advocacy movement aimed at addressing the high cost of tuition for international students. IGNITE, along with other Ontario college student unions, organized a peaceful protest at Queen’s Park on Nov. 17, 2022. The campaign was aimed at challenging government officials and post-secondary institutions to mend their actions toward international students. IGNITE is committed to helping international students by advocating for a tuition freeze. The campaign highlighted the importance of affordable education and the need to support international students in their pursuit of higher education.
IGNITE hosted Clubs Day on Oct. 18, 2022, to connect students with various clubs on campus and inspire them to join or start their own. Clubs Day offered the opportunity to explore different clubs and learn how to establish a new one.
Black Excellence Conference
The Black Excellence Conference, held in partnership with Humber’s BSSE, was a two-day in-person event on Oct. 20 – 21, 2022. The event focused on the Black community in the corporate world, featuring networking opportunities, an intellectual panel discussion with successful professionals, and a vendor marketplace supporting Black-owned businesses.
Women's History Month
During the month of March, we celebrated the contributions of the incredible leaders we have had at IGNITE for Women’s History Month. To further the celebration, students participated in a giant mural of all IGNITE Women in History by use of their selfies.
Black Excellence Scholarship
“Leadership is how you live, your choices, and believing in who you are and could be.”
IGNITE Pride Scholarship
“Winning the pride scholarship means I can have peace of mind.”
IGNITE Indigenous Scholarship
“I know that if I need it, will
be there to support me over the next four years.”
In the interests of staying accountable to our students and to ourselves, we have created action plans to provide a framework and timeline for the work we do to benefit the students we represent. These action plans cover our efforts to advance advocacy, equity and sustainability at Humber College, the University of Guelph-Humber and beyond. You can find details on what we have accomplished this year by clicking the link below:
The IGNITE Glow Scholarship annually rewards 13 students who engage in work-integrated learning programs that benefit community development and outreach. Successful candidates receive a $2000 scholarship based on their financial need and dedication to making a difference in the community.
IGNITE’s Skills Bundle is a program that offers students free or discounted personal and professional development trainings. Current and recent full-time students at Humber College or the University of Guelph-Humber can develop essential skills for their career through the program.
Learning Essentials Support
IGNITE partnered up with Humber Advancement and Alumni and the University of Guelph-Humber to offer up to $500 per academic year for learning essential items, including equipment, software, training, and more, to help students with additional costs.
The Tax Clinic is a program that offers on-campus help with tax return preparation by a team of trained student volunteers. This service is designed to make tax filing stress-free for students and help them learn how to do it themselves.
