Health & Dental Insurance Plan Your physical health is important.

What is insurance?

Health insurance is a financial safety net that helps you, as a student, manage the cost of healthcare so that you can focus on your studies worry-free. By paying your student insurance fee each semester, you are automatically enrolled in the IGNITE Health and Dental Insurance Plan. This plan provides extended coverage for items and services including dental, vision and prescriptions, which are not covered under OHIP or your international OHIP alternative plan (Morcare).

General Plan Information

We know health can be a huge worry, but we have your back! All full-time and part-time students at Humber College and full-time students at the University of Guelph-Humber (part-time students can opt-in) are charged $110.69 each semester for IGNITE’s Health and Dental Insurance plan. Initially, all students are assigned to the Balanced Plan, but you can change this to a plan that better suits your needs.

Student Benefit Card

Whenever you want to use your insurance, make sure to have your Student Benefit Card on hand, either physically or on your phone (you can get a physical card at IGNITE’s offices or download the e-card [PDF]). Usually, your service provider can bill WeSpeakStudent directly and you’ll only pay the difference between the cost and the amount that is covered.

Sometimes though, you’ll have to pay up front and file a claim to request reimbursement. Filing a claim means you are asking WeSpeakStudent to reimburse you for an appointment, prescription or other service for which you are covered under your insurance plan. By filing a claim, you provide documentation (your service provider and receipts for costs incurred) so the insurance company can validate your claim and compensate your costs.

In order to file a claim, you’ll need to create an eProfile with WeSpeakStudent. Once you have created your profile, you can submit your drug, dental and extended health claims either online or by mail. For more information on how to file a claim, download this handy guide [PDF].

You must be in the first semester of your academic year to qualify to opt out. This means that if your program starts in January, you must opt out by the Winter semester deadline. If you miss the deadline, you are not able to opt out the following semester. Deadline dates are listed above.

As long as you’re covered under a different plan with equal benefits or more, you have the opportunity to opt out of your WeSpeakStudent plan. Depending on your alternative coverage, you are eligible to opt out of the entire plan ($110.69 per semester) or the prescription part of the plan only. You will need to submit an opt out form with proof of alternative coverage through the WeSpeakStudent website.

Students who opt out of the IGNITE Health and Dental Plan successfully at the beginning of their study term will be opted out for the entire academic year. You must opt out in the first semester of your academic year by the deadline dates listed above.

For full details and to opt out, visit WeSpeakStudent.

How to Opt-In

If you’re not a full-time student this semester but want coverage, as long as you’re registered for at least one course or enrolled in a mandatory placement, you can opt-in for IGNITE’s Health and Dental Insurance for the academic year. If you have not been billed this semester’s fee and want to opt in, use the Contact Us or live chat links below to get in touch before the deadline dates listed above.

Family Opt-in

IGNITE cares about you and yours, which is why spouses and dependent children can be added to a student’s health and dental insurance plan for an additional fee. You can apply via WeSpeakStudent by choosing the Family Opt-In option before the deadline dates listed above.

IGNITE knows that no one plan fits all, which is why we offer three different plans to give you a choice in the health services you receive Once the year starts, you will be enrolled in the Balanced Plan by default, but you can switch to either the Enhanced Dental Plan, which boosts dental services or the Enhanced Drug Plan, which increases your prescription coverage. All plans cost the same, so you won’t need to pay any additional fees, but these changes would need to be made at the beginning of your academic year (deadlines above). Once you choose the plan that suits your needs, you will be enrolled in that plan for the whole policy year.
