Phew, what a year this has been!
The 2021-2022 academic year encompassed virtual learning, faculty contract negotiations, and a gradual return to campus for students.
The times were tough, but you made it through! And we at IGNITE did our best to support you through it all!
Like the previous years, this year too we worked on one-upping ourselves to make your life at Humber easier.
Keeping up with the changing modes of delivery, we switched between virtual and hybrid services throughout the year to ensure your wellbeing.
IGNITE’s 2021-2022 Impact Report details the steps taken by us to help improve your student life.
Here’s a quick highlight of the report to get you started.
Black North Initiative Pledge
We know that promises without action are futile. Therefore, after signing the Black North Initiative Pledge last year, we immediately jumped into action.
Through this signing, we hoped to actively participate in eliminating barriers faced by the Black community. To fulfill this, we created and executed several plans like allocating 10 per cent of IGNITE Leadership & Advocacy revenues to BIPOC scholarships and reaching our goal of hiring a minimum of 10 per cent of students who identify as Black.
We intend to keep growing and making changes to benefit the Black community through our three-year action plan.
Student advocacy
As your student union, advocating for your concerns is our top priority.
With this year bringing about more challenges than usual, we actively advocated on topics concerning you. This included things like distance learning, return to campus, vaccine policy, access to IT off campus, and college-faculty contract negotiations.
Financial Relief Program
Life as a student is hard enough but add financial troubles and emergency situations to the mix, and it can become unmanageable. Through our Financial Relief Program, we aim to alleviate your financial burden.
This year we provided $123,527 in aid to support 122 Humber and Guelph-Humber students.
We also provided the Black Excellence Scholarship, the IGNITE Pride Scholarship, and IGNITE Indigenous Scholarship to 15 students.
Also, 252 students were supported through our Learning Essentials Support program.
Real Talks
The best advice is usually given by people who have tried and tested it.
Knowing this, we hosted three Real Talks events with experts from their fields to give you advice needed to improve your career and personal wellbeing.
A little guidance can go a long way. So, we aim to keep creating spaces where you can actively discuss your professional and personal life.
Free services
IGNITE is committed to your physical and mental wellbeing. That’s why we provide you several free services in this category.
We distributed 396 free menstrual kits this year. And, as part of our Soupbar, we handed out 1242 frozen soups to students.
We also gave away free one-year subscriptions to Headspace, currently being used by 1026 students.
If you haven’t checked these services out yet, here’s your sign to do it!
