“There is no force more powerful than a woman determined to rise.”

W.E.B. Dubois

Women have played a significant role in shaping the world we live in today, and it’s important to recognize their contribution. So, in honour of International Women’s Day, let’s delve into the movements spearheaded by women that have made a significant impact in the world.

The feminist movement is one of the oldest ongoing women’s movements. The movement has been advocating for gender equality, reproductive rights, and women’s rights since the 19th century. This movement has made significant progress toward eliminating gender inequality and promoting women’s rights. Feminist leaders have played a critical role in pushing for equal pay, legal protections against sexual harassment and discrimination, as well as the right to vote, to name a few.

The #MeToo movement is a campaign that emerged in 2017 and has spread globally. It has encouraged women to speak up and share their experiences of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. The movement aims to highlight and address the pervasive problem of sexual violence and harassment against women.

Women’s Aid and Why I Stayed are two initiatives that emerged from the #MeToo movement. Women’s Aid provides support for women experiencing domestic violence, while Why I Stayed seeks to raise awareness about the complexity of domestic abuse.

Maternal mortality has been a significant problem worldwide. In many countries, pregnancy and childbirth complications are among the leading causes of death for women. The maternal mortality movement aims to reduce maternal deaths by improving access to quality maternal health care, family planning, and education.

In addition, the movement seeks to ensure that all women have access to the care and resources they need to give birth safely.

The Time’s Up movement is another campaign that emerged in response to the #MeToo movement. The initiative seeks to support victims of sexual harassment, abuse, and discrimination in the workplace.

The movement aims to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions and create safe working environments for women.

The climate strike movement was started by Greta Thunberg, a Swedish teenager, who began protesting outside the Swedish parliament in 2018. The movement advocates for immediate action to address climate change and has sparked a global wave of youth-led climate protests. The movement seeks to raise awareness about the devastating impact of climate change.

Women have played a vital role in advocating for gender equality, reproductive rights, and women’s rights. The ongoing women’s movements mentioned above have made significant strides towards eliminating gender inequality, promoting women’s rights, and creating safe and equitable working and living environments for women.

On this International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the achievements of women and continue to support and advocate for their rights.
