It is only now a couple of days until I graduate. After all the assignments were wrapped up, I had some free time to reflect on my time here. And to be honest, it was a little weird. I am from the graduating class of 2022, which means we didn’t get the fullest of campus life because of the pandemic.
Even when we came back in person, everything was different and strange at first. But, my campus life is definitely satisfying and memorable thanks to IGNITE – the official student union of Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber.
“What do they do to make our campus life better?” you may ask. So, here are five incredible things that IGNITE can do that exceed your expectations.

As a student, everything seems to go against us. Not only assignments and homework, but also finding a job. And don’t get me started with the challenge of juggling school, work, and a personal life. That’s why IGNITE offers on-campus, paid student positions.
When you work with IGNITE, you save yourself from commuting, facing job scams, and scheduling conflicts. And the best part? As a student who has some side hustle gigs, it is such a burden when it comes to doing taxes. The worst part is that unless you study finance and accounting, no one will show you step-by-step instructions without a small fee of what, $80 per filing?
That’s why IGNITE hooks you up with Tax Clinic every spring. When you book an appointment, not only you will get your tax return prepared for FREE, but we will also teach you how to do it, so that you can save money in the future. All you have to do is bring the paperwork and we will guide you through the rest!

What is the wildest thing you can dream of that may occur on your campus?
Since I was a teenager, I have always imagined what could happen if Justin Bieber showed up at my school. Growing up, that dream is once again lightened up with the IGNITE Concert.
Every year, IGNITE invites artists to come and perform exclusively for the students of Humber and UofGH. Some notable names are Rich the Kid, Swae Lee, 2 Chainz, and the list goes on.
We also have the Hype Hall, an event that celebrates the end of the school year, with live music, free food, video game station, and lots of plushie and sneaker giveaways.

With the price of groceries going up, it is becoming harder to fill our stomachs these days. Worry no more, IGNITE has got your back with the Soup Bar.
We offer a variety of delicious soups to suit your taste buds, from Italian tomato and pepper, to curry vegetable soup with chicken. And they are all free!
So next time, when you need something to enjoy before diving into assignments, grab your soup at LinX Cafe (located in LX110, at the south end of campus) at North campus and L Commons (2nd Floor, next to the elevators) at Lakeshore campus. Soup Bar is open from September to April each year.

Sometimes, when you walk around the campus, you will notice our activations. These activations are for promoting upcoming events and services to students. So don’t forget to check them out and enjoy free snacks and drink, while supplies last!
Get your medical needs covered

It is hard to be on your own in a completely new country. That’s why you need insurance in case something happens. When you pay the IGNITE Health and Dental fee, we provide coverage toward prescription medication, vision care, dentistry, accidents, and travel expenses through IGNITE’s Flexible Health and Dental Insurance Plan.
Not only that, you can also opt-in your dependent family members for each term of your study. Remember to check out the IGNITE website for the deadline dates.

If another insurance plan has already covered you, you can choose to opt out, or keep the one you need. Once your first semester of study starts, you are enrolled in the Balanced Plan by default. You can switch to either the Enhanced Dental Plan, which boosts dental services, or the Enhanced Drug Plan, which increases your prescription coverage.

Looking back at my time as a student, there are sure some ups and downs. But, when I think about it, I feel grateful for how IGNITE has made our campus life what it is right now. For the students who are starting this summer, more things are waiting for you to discover here on campus!
