Make your student life awesome, one class at a time.

It can be tough to head to school and be away from your friends and family. I get it; this is easily one of the scariest yet most exciting time of your life. But remember, you haven’t traveled this far just to curl up in the shadows. Your post-secondary experience should inspire you to figure out what you want to achieve in life. It should be the stepping stone to prepare you for your future career. Here’s how you can make the most out of your post-secondary life.

Go to class

While this sounds obvious, the first step to becoming familiar with your new environment is to attend classes regularly.

A lot of professors aren’t super strict about attendance, and skipping class might not always tank your grades. It doesn’t mean you can just chill at home and still ace the course.

Skipping classes can still have consequences. Not only will you miss out on the opportunity to make friends, but you’ll also miss the chance to network with your professors.

Taking occasional days off is fine, but for the rest of the time, go to class, sit at the front, take notes, and ask thoughtful questions. You’ll be surprised by how much difference these actions can make.

Get Involved On Campus

Another fantastic way to make the most of your student experience is getting involved. Attend events and join clubs. IGNITE regularly hosts exciting events like the IGNITE Concert, Hype Hall, and pop-ups where you can meet new people and have a great time. If you’re passionate about something, why not join or start a club? We offer a huge selection of clubs, each represented by students and open to new members.

Putting yourself out there increases your chances of meeting like-minded people, and helps you build long-lasting relationships. Just ask Mariana Ferreira, who met her best friend at the Speed Friending event last year.

Take care of your body

When you’re living life as a student you’re often living on your own or with friends. This comes with both pros and cons. The good news is that there are no restrictions on when you can go to sleep or how much junk food you can eat. The bad news is that your school experience can be negatively affected if you don’t take care of your body properly.

To fully enjoy your student life, it’s essential to maintain a healthy body. This can easily be done by eating right, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly.

Take advantage of one of the many services we have right here on campus. Grab nutritious soup from the Soupbar, or take a nap in our relaxing Sleep Lounge or go to the Humber Fitness Centers for a quick workout. The best part? Everything is free and accessible for Humber and Guelph-humber students!

Ask for Help

Adjusting to the the post-secondary environment can be real rollercoaster, both academically and emotionally. While it may seem easier to stay quiet about your challenges, never be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

If you’re struggling in class, reach out to your professor and attend their office hours. Don’t worry; they won’t bite. In fact, they’ll appreciate your proactive approach to learning.

If you’re dealing with stress or need someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to reach out to mental health support resources. They are here for you.

At the end of the day, your post-secondary experience is what you make of it. Embrace every opportunity, learn from every challenge, and remember that this journey is your stepping stone to a bright future. So, go out there, make your mark, and enjoy every moment of this fun chapter in your life.
