Long gaps in-between classes are no fun, especially when you’ve got nothing to do…or so you thought.

It’s easy to get bored waiting for our next class if all we do is endlessly check our social media feeds on our phones, or binge watch our favourite Netflix show while avoiding doing our school work.

Our phones have become our best friends whenever we feel bored or uncomfortable. But there are plenty of things you can do on or around campus that are fun and help make the time go by faster!

Here are a few things you might want to try next time you have a long break:

Test out Humber’s new bike-share service

As of September 2017, the new bike-share service Dropbike, has become available for all students over 18 years old at Humber’s North and Lakeshore campuses.

Here’s how it works: first create an account using the Dropbike app for Apple or Android users, then scan the code on the bike of the bike, and you’re ready to go! You do have to deposit a $49 fee in case the bike gets stolen or damaged, but it is refunded in 5-7 days. When you’re finished, bikes can be parked at any Haven, which are bike posts, bike racks, and parking areas marked in the app.

Bonus: you get your first three one-hour rides for free and after that, students can enjoy rides for only $1/hour!

You can get a more details on Humber’s website.

Visit the Arboretum at the Humber North campus

For all you nature enthusiasts, the Humber North campus has a beautiful spot known as the Arboretum, right in our back yard! It’s open to the public as well as Humber students, and features beautiful gardens, bike and hiking trails, and lots of spots to sit and unwind.

Here are some things you can do at the Arboretum:

  1. Plan a picnic or photoshoot with your friends during your break
  2. Spend some time alone to relax, get inspired, or study. Being in nature is proven to help improve concentration, memory and creativity.
  3. Rent a bike with Dropbike and explore the Arboretum’s trails

Visit Colonel Samuel Smith Park at Humber’s Lakeshore campus

Lakeshore campus has a scenic spot right in it’s back yard too. Colonal Samuel Smith Park is right next to the waterfront and features bike trails, fishing, and bird-watching areas, as well as picnic tables for students to unwind.

Here are some things to do at the park:

  1. Sharpen your skates and get ready for some winter fun because starting Nov. 25, part of the park’s trail transforms into an ice skating trail (in the shape of a figure eight)
  2. Plan a group study session, picnic, or photoshoot near the lakeshore and enjoy the calming atmosphere
  3. Rent a bike with Dropbike and explore the park’s trails along the waterfront

Try some new spots to eat

Humber’s North campus has a lot of places to eat on campus, from Subway to Tim Hortons to Smoke’s Poutine. But did you know we have our own restaurant, the Humber Room, run by Humber’s Culinary, Hospitality & Event Management students? The restaurant serves bistro cuisine and operates from Monday-Friday 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Book your reservations on their website.

Lakeshore’s campus also has some awesome spots if you want to try something new. A three-minute walk from campus, Snack Shack offers mouth-watering burgers, burrito bowls, tacos and banh mi. You can also check out 850 Degrees Pizzeria if you’re looking to splurge a bit. It’s a 10-minute walk from campus, and has wood-fired pizzas made with local ingredients.
