When life throws chaos at you, throw cozy clothing and scented candles right back!

Life can be a whirlwind of chaos, from work deadlines to social obligations and never-ending to-do lists. To make sure I don’t lose my marbles in the midst of it, I decided to make some tweaks to my space — my bedroom.

To create the perfect zen space I decided to go all in, from cozy clothes to carefully picking the right scent. Here are some additions I made to create a peaceful environment for myself.

Designating spaces for clarity

A cluttered space often leads to a cluttered mind, so the first step in my journey to zen was to create dedicated areas within my bedroom. This meant allotting spaces for various activities, which included a designated place for my vanity. Now, I don’t have to rifle through drawers searching for my favourite lipstick; everything has its place.

I also established a study station where I could solely focus on my work or studies. This was important to avoid working on my bed, the rule was simple: my bed was for rest and sleep only.

Colors have a profound impact on our moods and emotions. To create a calming atmosphere, I opted for a calming colour palette. Soft, muted colors like pale blues, gentle grays, and subtle greens dominate my bedroom decor. These shades not only provide a peaceful backdrop but also minimize distractions, allowing my mind to unwind and focus on relaxation.

Colouring Books

Colouring books are not just for kids. Their therapeutic benefits have been recognized by experts. The act of colouring is a mindfulness exercise that helps reduce stress and anxiety. I introduced colouring books into my serene space, both for their therapeutic value and the sense of nostalgia they bring. Colouring serves as a fantastic way to unplug from the digital world and reconnect with my inner creativity.

Candles, essential oils and more candles!

Scented candles became an integral part of my bedroom’s zen makeover. Lighting one of these candles infuses the air with a gentle, soothing aroma. Lavender, chamomile, and eucalyptus are some of my favorite scents for relaxation. The soft glow of candlelight adds to the overall mood, transforming my room into a haven of tranquility. It’s a simple but effective way to induce a sense of calm after a hectic day.

The magic of oodies

An important addition to my closet this year was comfortable clothing. When I return home from a chaotic day, the first thing I do is slip into my cherished oodie. This oversized hoodie-blanket hybrid is like a warm hug after a long day. It’s the epitome of coziness and a symbol of comfort.

In my quest of making the zen-est space, I found some additions that have enhanced my bedroom’s calming atmosphere. These include:

  • Yoga mat: Having a yoga mat at the ready allows me to engage in impromptu stretches and exercises. It’s a quick and effective way to release tension and center myself.
  • Soothing music playlist: the right music can elevate the calming effect of your space. A curated playlist of serene, instrumental tracks that you can play during relaxation.
  • Indoor plants: The presence of greenery can bring life and serenity to any space. A few low-maintenance indoor plants add a touch of nature to my room.

Zen on campus

Creating a sanctuary is not just about design; it’s about an intentional shift in lifestyle. It’s about carving out spaces that encourage relaxation, providing tools for mindfulness, and embracing the simple joys of life.

While you are on campus, and life gets a bit too much, head down to the IGNITE Zen Zone located at the Lakeshore campus in the K building’s basement for a much needed break!
