Small steps today can lead to big changes tomorrow!
Are you someone who loves to lead, advocate for change or be a voice for your peers? Then you might just be the perfect fit for the IGNITE Board of Directors!
With the nomination period for the May 2025 to April 2026 term right around the corner, now is your chance to step up and shape the student experience at Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber.
Whether you’re passionate about leadership, advocacy or making a difference on campus, being part of the Board of Directors can unlock a world of opportunity.
Let’s look at some benefits and requirements to become a board member.
Why become a board member?
As a director, you’ll get the chance to represent your fellow students and have a direct impact on the decisions that affect their campus life. It’s not just about sitting in meetings, it’s about advocating for important changes and making sure the student voice is heard.
If you’re someone who enjoys taking the lead, setting strategic goals or participating in meaningful discussions about student life, this is the perfect way to put those interests into action.
That’s not all! Running for the board is also a powerful way to build your resume, grow your skillset and prepare for post-graduation success.
Whether you’re interested in team leadership, public speaking or community advocacy, the board offers hands-on experience in all of these areas and more.
Build skills and network
Being a part of the board is a win-win in every way. Not only do you get to make decisions that directly impact your peers, but you’ll also improve your leadership and decision-making skills, all of which are highly sought after by employers.
As a board member, you’ll be accountable to the student body by actively receiving input and feedback, ensuring that you represent their needs and concerns.
You’ll act as a student leader within the Humber and UofGH communities, staying accessible to all students, especially those on your campus. This will also provide you with a good opportunity to expand your network.
And let’s not forget about the financial incentive! Board members are compensated for their time and efforts, making this not only a chance to build your skill set but also a great way to earn extra while making a difference.
What do you need to qualify?
If you think this sounds like an opportunity you’d like to pursue, the next step is meeting the eligibility criteria. To run for a position on the board, you must:
- Be a full-time student at the time of the nomination period (though you can be a full or part-time student during your term if elected)
- Have good academic standing (no academic probation)
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have completed at least one semester in post-secondary education (whether at Humber or another school)
Once you meet these requirements, you’re eligible to nominate yourself for one of the available positions on the board. The nomination period will run from Jan. 13, 2025, to Jan. 26, 2025—mark your calendars!
Making a real impact
I got in touch with some current members of the Board of Directors and here’s what they said.
Jack Pickett shared that his time on the board has been incredibly beneficial and he’s thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
“You really feel a strong connection to Humber when you are on the board,” Pickett said.
The role has helped him influence campus life, develop skills in decision-making, budgeting and planning and advocate for students’ needs. He also believes it enhances his resume by showcasing initiative, responsibility and commitment to community engagement.
I also spoke with Harleen Lamba. She mentioned that her experience being on the board has been rewarding.
“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside a dedicated and inspiring group of individuals who have made this journey enjoyable,” Lamba said. “This role has brought me immense joy, strengthened my friendships and allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the community.”
