Who knew getting fit could be this entertaining!

Navigating the demands of work, studies and assignments can seriously drain your mental energy, leaving little brainpower for planning gym workouts. However, I made a resolution this year to hit the gym at least three times a week for a minimum of 40 minutes each session. So I decided to try out different classes offered by the Humber Fitness Centre.

Every semester, the athletics department releases their class schedule and students can drop in if they wish to join. Here are some of the classes I’ve found effective and enjoyable, making my gym planning a breeze and maximizing my fitness gains.

Pilates on a ball feels like a playful trip back to kindergarten, but it’s all about channeling your inner toned self.

This class initially caught my eye, and trust me, it’s a killer workout activating muscles I never knew existed.

It has become the class I keep coming back to for that refreshing, toned feeling. A plus? The workouts are done on a big bouncy ball, I mean how can you say no to that?

Strength and stretch classes offer a quick yet comprehensive workout targeting every inch of your body— yes, every inch! This fast-paced class blends weight movements with extended stretches, leaving you feeling accomplished and flexible.

Yoga

Yoga is the perfect remedy after a long day filled with assignments and deadlines. It’s a sanctuary for quiet movement, allowing you to let go of the day’s worries.

I’ve found these yoga sessions particularly beneficial during stressful times like midterms or finals, helping me find balance amid chaos.

Barre

Barre classes were a mystery to me at first, but now they’re one of my favourites. As a student and a writer glued to my laptop, improving my posture was a must.

The beginner-friendly class atmosphere and attentive instructors ensure you get the most out of every session – if you were a fan of Barbie movies growing up, you will enjoy the class even more!

Let me tell you, the post-workout sleep after these classes is worth every drop of sweat. These classes are high-energy, targeting all muscle groups and leaving you feeling energized and ready to tackle the day. Plus, the cardio at the end is the perfect finisher.

Exploring various gym classes as a beginner has been both enlightening and rewarding. And if you’re a student at Humber College or the University of Guelph-Humber, don’t forget these classes are free for you — so take full advantage!

Consistency and variety are key to a successful fitness journey, so don’t be afraid to try new classes and find what works best for you.
