Write, even when you have nothing to write about.

If you know me, you know I’ve always loved writing.

I started writing in elementary school. I went from writing short stories on fairy-tales to manically scribbling everything and anything on my mind in my notebook. Writing for me was an escape, I felt safe with my pen in hand. After experiencing bullying in the past, I liked having an outlet to vent my feelings even when I felt alone.

Despite it all, writing has always been an important part of my life. It has allowed me to have an outlet for my feelings and emotions. I always felt like I wrote out what I was thinking better than I spoke it. From speeches to poems, writing helped me get through a lot growing up. As I got older, my anxiety surrounding writing worsened and my confidence greatly diminished. After negative experiences with teachers in high school, feeling confident in my writing ability was hard.

Since then, I always felt afraid to put my writing out there. Part of me was insecure and didn’t want to face ridicule and part of me felt like there was no point in doing so because nobody would read it.

Instead of succumbing myself to ridicule, I kept my work to myself.

Before finding this position online, I’d post my work on my blog but nonetheless would feel ashamed to share it with many people. My love for writing inspired me to pursue media studies in university in hopes that my writing could one day inspire, inform and entertain people.

When I found that IGNITE was offering this position, it seemed too good to be true. A job, right on campus where I could write and get paid for it? The thought sounded amazing to me, though it took me a while to get the courage to apply. The thoughts in the back of my mind kept telling me there was no point. I wouldn’t get the position anyways. Luckily, I got the courage to apply and it was the BEST decision I’ve ever made for myself.

I remember when I got offered the job, I was completely ecstatic because I knew this would be a job I’d love doing. It all seemed to good to be true.

The opportunity that IGNITE gives students to do what they’re passionate about is amazing. Thanks to IGNITE, I’m able to write stories that I’m proud of and share my experiences that can hopefully help people. I’m able to gain hands-on work experience in a field that I’m so passionate about that will also benefit my future one day.

Being able to be a part of a team of such amazing, hard working people has been such an asset to my life. My skills as a writer have definitely strengthened since joining this team, benefiting my studies in the process.

Being a student is not easy. It’s expensive, and at times can feel overwhelming. Having a work life, school life and social life just seems so intangible sometimes. Yet, working at IGNITE has been nothing short of amazing. I’m able to work at my campus and tailor my work schedule around my school schedule. This job has allowed me to gain money doing something I love and has allowed me to have better time management skills in the process. IGNITE is such a welcoming place to work, and it has 100% changed my life for the better.

Thanks to this opportunity I have a new found confidence in myself that I probably wouldn’t have had otherwise. This is more than a job to me, it’s a learning experience that I am beyond grateful for.
