A house becomes a home with new friendships and memories!

The holiday season is almost here and for many international students, going home might not be an option this year due to packed schedules, expensive flights or wanting to explore more of Canada!

If you’d rather stay cozy indoors, then let me tell you, Toronto has a lot to offer! You can catch a holiday show or concert, explore art galleries filled with beautiful exhibits or invite your friends over for movies! Many cafes offer delicious seasonal drinks like hot chocolate and eggnog—perfect for the winter season.

There are a lot of opportunities to create new memories by exploring the city and having fun with your friends. So let’s check out some awesome holiday activities to participate in!

Explore WinterFest at Canada’s Wonderland

Canada’s Wonderland WinterFest is the ultimate holiday destination! Step into a magical winter fairytale, where thousands of twinkling lights, festive treats, stunning ice sculptures and exciting rides create a celebration of the season that even the Grinch would love.

Experience breathtaking light displays, glide across the ice at Snow Flake Lake and enjoy live music performances that might just inspire you to dance (just don’t slip on the ice while dancing!).

Whether you’re embracing the full festive spirit or seeking a cozy winter retreat, WinterFest offers the perfect way to experience the magic of the season in Toronto.

Have a fun karaoke night

The holiday season isn’t really complete without a little off-key singing and questionable dancing (no judgment because I’m bad at both.) Round up your friends and head to one of Toronto’s karaoke bars for a night of laughs, music and memories you’ll never forget.

Whether you’re messing up the classic “Jingle Bells” song or absolutely ravaging the latest pop hits, karaoke is the best way to let loose and make holiday cheer even better.

Who cares if you forget the lyrics or trip over your own feet? Karaoke is all about sharing laughs and having a good time with your friends (make sure to delete your singing videos from their phones afterward!).

Visit the Winter Village

Kick off the holiday season in Toronto by heading to the Distillery Winter Village (it’s like stepping into a Hollywood Christmas movie!) Discover charming wooden stalls, sparkling lights and the sweet smell of seasonal treats filling the air.

You can also wander the cobblestone streets, soaking up the festive vibes. Enjoy holiday tunes and shop for unique gifts from local craftspeople and cozy vendor cabins.

While you’re there, grab a bite at one of the many restaurants, outdoor bars or cafés like Avro Coffee or Brick Street Bakery. And, of course, don’t leave without grabbing a bag of roasted chestnuts—they’re the ultimate winter snack to keep you warm as you shop and enjoy the magic of the season!

Adventure time at Rouge National Urban Park

Ready to dive into winter adventure? Rouge National Urban Park is calling you! Just a short trip from downtown Toronto, this hidden gem is the perfect spot to embrace the snowy season.

Imagine snowshoeing through deep snow like a pro or hitting the trails for a winter hike surrounded by snow-covered trees and sparkling frozen ponds. It’s a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Do you want to know the best part? It’s completely free!

Whether you’re hanging out with friends or venturing solo, Rouge is the place to experience winter in Canada like never before.

So, grab your warm gear and get ready to explore the beauty of the season because the snow is waiting!

Holiday movie marathon

Not every holiday activity has to be outdoors! Sometimes, the best way to enjoy the season is by staying in and watching your favourite holiday movies.

Toronto’s Royal Theatre and TIFF Bell Lightbox offer cozy screenings of festive classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Polar Express and Elf, which are perfect for getting into the holiday spirit.

If you’re more of a homebody, skip the crowds and create your own movie marathon. Grab some blankets, pop some popcorn and sip on a warm drink while you settle in for a holiday film fest in your living room while rewatching all the Home Alone movies.

Whether you’re out at the theatre or snuggled up at home, there’s no better way to relax and enjoy the season than watching a good holiday movie (definitely what I’m planning to do).

Host a holiday potluck

Missing the warmth of home-cooked meals this holiday season? Why not host a holiday potluck with your friends? It’s the perfect way to share the love—and food—by having everyone bring a dish from their culture or their go-to holiday recipe.

You’ll get to taste a variety of mouthwatering flavours, whether it’s a warm winter stew, a sweet apple pie or my personal favourite gajar ka halwa (carrot pudding). And don’t forget the delicious hot chocolate with whipped cream (I NEED THAT RIGHT NOW!).

Not only will it fill your belly, but it will also fill your heart with laughter and cozy vibes as you gather around the table with good company.

So, round up your friends, put on your favourite holiday tunes and let the delicious feast begin!

For international students, the holiday season can sometimes bring a sense of homesickness, but Toronto’s vibrant cultural scene, diverse holiday events and welcoming community offers the perfect opportunity to create memories and share the festive spirit with friends.

Remember, the holidays are not just about where you are, but about the moments you create and the joy you bring into those moments.

Whether you choose to celebrate in the great outdoors or enjoy the warmth of indoor gatherings, Toronto offers endless opportunities for fun, excitement and connection.

So, embrace the holiday spirit, make the most of your time in this beautiful city and let the festive season be filled with laughter, friendship and unforgettable experiences.

Enjoy the holidays!
