You can never be over prepared

Are you living in a dorm or campus residence this year?

Student dorms can be a tough adjustment, but it’s a great opportunity to meet new friends and get involved in student life.

Implementing essential items in your room can make it feel like home! Here are ten dorm room essentials every student needs.

If you want some tea, hot chocolate or coffee without leaving your dorm, you’re going to need a tea kettle.

Power bar

In the residence, there are only a few wall outlets. In order to have all of your devices fully charged, make sure to get a high-quality power bar so you can stay online!

Mini fridge

A mini fridge is a must. Whether you need to keep your drinks cold or need a quick snack, what’s better than having a fridge in your room? This can also help you to save money by buying groceries instead of eating at the dining hall every meal.

Rug

Who likes waking up to freezing cold floors? No one. Ensure this doesn’t happen by getting a warm fuzzy rug to greet your feet when you wake up.

Microwaveable dishes, cups, cutlery

If you’re in a single or suite-style dorm, all students have access to shared spaces with kitchens and microwaves. The only downside is that you need to supply your own cutlery, dishes, cups and cooking supplies.

So, make sure to buy microwave-safe items; if you need a pan for cooking make sure they are induction-friendly pots and pans.

Shower caddy

If you have a shared washroom, you will definitely need a shower caddy. When sharing with other students you can help keep the washrooms clean by carrying your personal hygiene items back to your room with a shower caddy.

Water bottles

Depending on how far your room is from the nearest water fountain, you’re going to want to be prepared. By having a bunch of filled reusable water bottles (preferably cold in your mini-fridge) you can stay hydrated for long days!

Flashlight

Sometimes you need to be prepared for all situations. If the power goes out, you’re going to want to have a flashlight for emergency purposes. Of course, you can use your phone but the power will drain quickly, which is why we suggest a flashlight.

French press

On a student’s budget, coffee can get expensive. Start saving money today and make your own coffee from the comfort of your dorm. If you don’t know how to use a french press there are some great tutorials online! You can even try to make fancy drinks every once in a while to treat yourself by purchasing special Starbucks creamers and sweeteners from the grocery store!

This one should be self-explanatory. Although, the staff does a great job at keeping the shared washrooms clean you never know what could be building up on the shower floors.

If you’re looking for more items to add to your shopping list Humber Residence curated a list with everything you need! Moving into a new space can be scary, but there are many people here to support you.
