Skills could be your secret weapon in landing your next job.
If you are actively seeking a job or internship, this piece might be perfect for you!
As we all know, entering the job market has become increasingly difficult—now more than ever. In fact, according to Statistics Canada’s November 2024 data, Toronto’s unemployment rate has reached its highest point since the pandemic.
This means now it’s the time to focus on qualifying yourself for the job you want. Career readiness comes through education and, most importantly, skills!
Don’t stress, though—I have the best tips to help you gain valuable experience and stand out from the competition.
The job market today
As we know, the job market has changed significantly in recent years. AI has transformed the world and the employment landscape.
For instance, did you know that when you apply for a job, your resume is first scanned by AI for keywords that indicate whether you’re a good candidate? That’s how technologically-advanced the job market is right now.
Many jobs are either automated or heavily reliant on technology. This is why recruiters are looking for talent—skills that machines don’t have, but you do!
Why do employers prioritize practical experience?
Managers must be critical in finding the right person to meet the company’s needs. Sometimes, that need is more focused on experience.
Ask yourself: if you are studying graphic design, how well do you handle a platform like the Adobe Creative Cloud? Or how proficient are you in programming if you’re a computer science major?
According to The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Tanya Roxburgh, talent acquisition manager at Vivup, states: “Now a degree and a good education is nice to have, but not an automatic shortlist.”
The reason so many employers are prioritizing skills is the high demand for jobs. Just ask your friends—everyone is looking for one.

Develop soft and transferable skills
Soft or transferable skills are traits that aren’t job-specific but contribute to an organization’s long-term success.
Some of the most valuable global employability skills include teamwork, communication, leadership, problem-solving, adaptability and productivity.
By mastering these skills, you will become a strong team player and that will help you collaborate effectively in any work environment.
The importance of continuous learning
The key to staying qualified is keeping yourself up to date with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed in your industry.
A great way to do this is by pursuing a graduate degree, completing training programs or earning certifications and professional development opportunities.
In your free time, take a moment to identify gaps in your skills and work on filling them. Platforms like Skillshare and Coursera offer millions of free courses to help you stay in a continuous learning mindset.
Finding a balance between knowledge and experience
Think about it—if you needed a plumber ASAP, would you hire a recent apprentice or someone with 10 years of experience? This is a no-brainer, right?
However, education still plays a crucial role! The key is to qualify yourself both academically and through essential hands-on experience.
That’s why you should focus on applying your knowledge in practice—and that’s where IGNITE comes in.

A degree definitely helps you get noticed, but if you want that dream job, you shouldn’t stop there!
