New year, new goals!
Just like that, we are approaching another new year ahead. 2024 has been quite a ride, to say the least. Before you know it, we are at the end of the road. This means the new year is fast approaching. For those looking for a reason to turn a new leaf, this is your sign! After all, who doesn’t want a fresh start?
Creating new year resolutions has proven to improve mental health and inspire positive action. It can be a great way to prepare yourself for a more intentional living. This makes having a steady goal in your head a perfect way to set you up for success.
Life is a great do-it-yourself project. Your goals for the new year are entirely up to you. You don’t have to worry if you don’t have it yet. Here is a scoop of students’ goals for the new year to get you excited about making yours.
Passion project goals
Turning your passion projects into action can just be the additional spice you never knew you needed. Do you have an interest or talent you want to develop? Transforming it into a passion project can be your next big goal. Passion projects are a way to get your creative juices flowing while also making your passion a reality.
This is the case for Ravnoor Kaur, a human resource management student who is all about pursuing her passion for 2025. As an enthusiast for all things beauty and cosmetics, she wants to be a makeup artist and share her love for the craft with others on social media.
“I want to start my own online page because I just love makeup and fashion, so I will definitely pursue that next year,” Kaur said.
Kaur also intends to enroll in a makeup artist course to secure a proper certification. She said that professionally doing her passion will be what she will be working toward for next year.
Fitness goals
If there is one thing you can never go wrong with, that’s setting your fitness goals for the year. Health is wealth. Your body is the avenue to get you to improve other aspects of your life—mental or physical. That’s why it deserves that much-needed love and hard work. If you’re looking for a time to start, the new year is the perfect reason to be more purposeful about taking care of yourself.
Izza Aquino, an advertising and graphic design student, will prioritize fitness for 2025. One of the items on her new year’s resolutions list is to return to the gym room and get her sweat on. Aquino intends to take full advantage of the free membership for Humber Polytechnic students and have her regular visits at the Humber Lakeshore Fitness Centre.
“I’d like to get that summer body ready for summer next year,” Aquino added.
With her mind on the prize, she plans to visit the gym twice a week. We’re rooting for your fitness journey, Aquino!
Career goals
As post-secondary students, one intention we share in common is to set the foundations for our career path. This makes setting goals for your dream career a must-have for every student.
For advertising and marketing communications student Lyca Tabuyog, 2025 is focused on securing a good job. Tabuyog is set to finish her program next year. She hopes to jump-start her career in marketing as soon as she receives her diploma.
“I want a full-time job just so I can have the freedom to do whatever I want,” she said.
Asked about her plan of action, Tabuyog said she intends to build her portfolio and gain freelance experience. She hopes these concrete steps will help her in aiming for job security.
Lifestyle goals
Habit goals are one of the most common new year resolutions everyone makes. While most new year goals can be in the form of habit formation, it can also be the other way around. Unlearning habits that no longer serve you well can be one of the goals you would want on your list.
You can take Marijose Sachinas, an advertising and graphic design student, as an example as she vows to unlearn a habit for 2025. Sachinas is your typical coffee girl who can only start the day with a coffee in hand. But this is something she wants to change for next year.
“I want to reduce my caffeine intake,” Sachinas said.
She said she plans to transition into drinking decaf coffee first and eventually decrease the number of times she drinks coffee weekly.
Travel goals
The world is meant to be explored—that’s for sure. No wonder travel goals are easily one of the best you’ll make for yourself. With seven continents and 195 countries, the possibilities for new adventures are endless. There will always be new sights and new things to discover, whether across the country or abroad.
Vanessa Carmona, an advertising and marketing communications student, has her eyes set on exploring Canada’s finest nature spot for 2025.
“I want to go to Banff, Alberta and visit Lake Louise,” she said gleefully.
Carmona said she always dreamed of visiting the picturesque landscape she had consistently seen online. As an international student from the Philippines, she also wants to take advantage of the opportunity to explore Canada’s other provinces while she is here.
She wants to achieve this goal as she plans to go with her boyfriend. Now, that’s both a travel goal and a relationship goal right there!
Mariel Magsino, also from the advertising and marketing communications program, intends to travel overseas in 2025. With the intent to fulfill the dream of her younger self, she said she’ll make the moves to turn it into a reality.
“My goal next year is to visit Switzerland after graduation. It’s my childhood dream,” Magsino said excitedly.
Magsino said that her Switzerland trip would also be a gift to herself as she is about to finish her studies at Humber next year. She plans to go with her friends and make it an unforgettable girls’ trip.
Dream big!
Dreams do come true. That is if you act towards your goals. But first and foremost, set them first. Once you know what you want your future to look like, the steps to get there will be much easier. As they say, the hardest part is to start, so make sure you know where to begin.
Customize your own goals according to what you feel is right for you. There is no right or wrong answer. Everyone will have their own areas of focus that they would like to work on for the new year. You can curate your own with what you feel is most important to you.
Remember to work towards your goals every day. You have a total of 365 days to make it into a reality. That’s approximately 8,760 hours if we’re really counting. So, make sure to make every moment count.
What are you waiting for? Grab a pen and paper. Start writing your next big moves. Once you have your goals set, 2025 will look pretty great!
