While spells of snow and sub-zero temperatures might try to convince us otherwise, I refuse to be swayed – SUMMER IS HERE! With that undeniable fact out of the way, we can now officially look forward to patio szn. Nothing better than sipping a rich coffee, clad in a summer dress and lounging in the sun while people watching, eh?
To ensure you wonderful people get the most out of this summer, we explored the city and picked our favourite patios, right from cheap and delicious tacos outdoors to pizza straight out of the oven! Whether you’re seeking a tranquil corner to unwind with your buddies and process the semester or a lively vibe to celebrate the end of exams, our patio list has something for everyone.
So, without further ado, go grab your sunscreen, get your GC going, and get ready to explore these beautiful patios. If you, like me, make ambitious plans but hate yourself when they draw closer, I promise these spots will be worth it once you’re there!
Añejo Restaurant
Find yourself exploring a unique journey through the rich flavours and culture of Jalisco and Central Mexico at Añejo, while lounging at their stunning patio. As a student, you’ll particularly love their $3 tacos and $6 Mexican mocktails during Happy Hour! Don’t forgot to try what they’re known for best: the Quesabirria taco. Braised short rib, Oaxaca cheese, pickled onions, birria consomé and salsa cascabel all piled high on a flour tortilla – writing that just made my mouth water. Bonus? Sign up for their emails and snag free churros!

Lapinou
One of our staff faves, this bistro with exposed-brick walls & wooden rafters serving food inspired by regional French flavours. Situated in the midst of the hustle and bustle of downtown, you can grab $10 sips and snacks here from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day. Experience their Michelin-approved Parisian offerings on a budget, and don’t forget to take cute pictures on their patio against their twinkling deck lights and plants! It’s really among the prettiest patios out there.

Tita’s Mexican Food
If Añejo didn’t satisfy your craving for a great patio and Mexican food, we present to you… *drumroll* Tita’s! With locations in Etobicoke (right in the neighbourhood for Lakeshore folks) and downtown, this spot provides a genuine Mexican experience through a variety of dishes and flavours you will never forget, dishes and flavours that Mexicans have enjoyed for generations. Inspired by the founder’s beloved grandmother, Cuca, this spot serves up family and home, right on a plate! The adorable patio is an incredible bonus!

Ronnie’s Local
Do you want to tell your friends about a ‘little spot’ that will become their regular hangout? Tell them about Ronnie’s! This little unassuming spot in the heart of Kensington Market is a favourite. As BlogTO puts it, their front patio, adorned with Christmas lights and picnic tables, feels so much like someone’s backyard party. If you want a rowdy, bustling and homey vibe, this is your perfect patio spot. While the pictures aren’t going to be IG-worthy, your experience definitely will!
Cafe23 Coffee Bar
Make sure you plan ahead for this one, because it’s a favourite among Torontonians and usually has a lineup outside! Like a rabbit burrow, it features a maze of little nooks and rooms, along with a gorgeous garden and patio that’s truly a hidden gem in the middle of the city. This spot, in the Trinity Bellwoods area, boasts rich décor and incredible aesthetics that will make for the most perfect social media pictures. The food (read: cinnamon rolls) are also to die for.
Alright, students! It’s time to turn up the heat on your summer adventures! With these top-notch patios waiting to be explored, there’s no excuse not to get out there and soak up the sun-soaked vibes of Toronto. Let’s make this summer one for the books!
