Must-listen bangers to add to your playlist!

The famous Ludwig van Beethoven once said, “Music can change the world.”

If there’s one thing that’s been part of human life since its early days, it’s music. From ancient Egypt, where music was an important part of daily life, to ancient Greece, where most Greek men learned to play an instrument, music has been a constant. Whether it’s back in the days or more recently with Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind,” music has always been an integral part of human culture.

Music does more than just entertain, it also offers health benefits such as improved memory, reduced anxiety and boosted exercise performance. More importantly, music connects people, nations and cultures.

But, did you know that our music preferences change with the different seasons? A study shows that people tend to prefer slower music like blues and jazz in the fall and winter, while in the spring and summer, more energetic genres like electronic and hip-hop are favoured.

As summer rolls in, the weather warms and the skies clear, we hit the campus to find out what your fellow peers are listening to. Check out their top picks and refresh your summer playlist with these bangers.

Dance Monkey – Tones and I

“They say oh my god I see the way you shine.” Yes, I know – this is a classic.

With more than two billion views on YouTube, “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I is the top pick of global business management student Cansu Erenler Tanis. This song has received many awards including the Best Pop Release at the ARIA Music Awards of 2019 and Song of the Year at the APRA Music Awards of 2020.

Tanis says she likes the beginning part and the pitch of the voices in the song, which she mostly listens to while at work.

“I like the pitch voices. It makes me energetic in the morning,” Tanis said.

What A Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong

Oh, Louis Armstrong, what a legend.

Friends with Tanis, Sindhu Priya, also a global business management student, chose the classic “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.

Priya shares her love for the song, describing it as a timeless classic that always brings her good vibes.

Truly, this song never fails to resonate.

My Universe – Coldplay and BTS

With over 300 million views on YouTube, this collaboration between the South Korean band BTS and the rock band Coldplay produced one of the biggest hits of 2021. “My Universe” was chosen by Aditi Lakra, who is also friends with Priya and Tanis, rounding out their shared music picks.

The song debuted as number one on the Billboard Hot 100, marking BTS’ sixth chart-topper in the US. Lakra expresses her love for Coldplay, noting her appreciation for the song’s lyrics and the band’s music in general. She particularly enjoys the upbeat and danceable vibes of the song.

The Man – The Killers

I don’t know about you, but this banger really gets me in the disco mood, with its pop beats blasting through the speakers.

A trio of friends, Abhishek Arya, Ankit Pathak and Dishant Bhojwani, have selected “The Man” by the Las Vegas rock band The Killers as their ultimate summer song. Bhojwani mentions he first heard this song while watching Suits, and he’s been loving it since.

Released in 2017 as the lead single from The Killers’s album Wonderful Wonderful, “The Man” eventually climbed to become the band’s ninth song to hit the top 10 on the Alternative Songs chart.

Midnight City – M83

Choosing a summer song was a tough decision for Jalal Kamadia – he showed me his playlist filled with summer-vibe tracks, and picking just one was a challenge.

Kamadia chose “Midnight City” by the French electronic music group M83. Although this song was released in 2011, it never gets old. “Midnight City” is truly a quintessential summer song, having been ranked fifth on Triple J’s hottest 100 and topping the Pitchfork Media chart of Top 100 Tracks of 2011.
