Walk for Reconciliation
Thu, Sep 26 , 11:15 am – 2:00 pm
Since 2021, Sept. 30 has been recognized as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to remembering the children who never returned home and honouring the Survivors of the residential school system. This day, also known as Orange Shirt Day, serves to raise awareness of the deep scars left by residential schools on individuals, families and generations of Indigenous Peoples. We wear orange to symbolize the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem endured by Indigenous children over generations.
In partnership with Humber Indigenous Education & Engagement and the Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, IGNITE is hosting a reflective Walk for Reconciliation. This walk is an opportunity for the Humber community to come together and reflect on the lasting effects of residential schools and to support survivors.
The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 11:15 a.m., starting from the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation and ending at the Humber Arboretum. Students and Staff can sign up on-site or pre-register online via this event page. The first 50 students who register will receive orange shirts and the first 25 to arrive will get a commemorative pin. Make sure you don’t miss out!
The event also highlights the importance of the Emergency Bursaries for Indigenous students, which is open for external donations – you can contribute here!
Our very own student advocate Naisha Suthaharan will be attending the event to deliver a speech.
Join us for this significant event to help raise awareness and reflect on the profound impact of the residential school system.
