Check out these controversial fashion trends; I’m sure you have an opinion about them!

There’s no doubt fashion always sparks opinions about what should and shouldn’t be on the runway. We’ve all had those moments watching a fashion show or checking trendy outfits and either don’t understand the hype or totally vibe with it.

With S/S 25 fashion week in the rearview, let’s take a look at some fashion trends and see if you love or hate them!

Big textured coats

Living in Canada, we’ve all faced those harsh winters and the need for big coats and jackets that make you look like a minion. From parkas to fur coats, and of course, the iconic Aritzia Super Puff, we’ve seen it all.

But there are a lot of people debating whether big textured coats should stay as a trend. With this type of coat, there’s a fine line between looking like the mob-wife aesthetic or a big bird. Will you be wearing one this winter?

A big fashion trend seen in 2024 is leopard print. If you thought it was left behind in the 2000s with cheetah print, think again — leopard print is back in full force this year. In fact, animal prints have made comebacks decade after decade after being popularized by Jackie Kennedy in the 60s. Personally, I love this trend, but what do you think?

Birkenstocks

Moving on to one of the most talked-about trends: the classic Birkenstocks. The internet is flooded with comments about these sandals, comparing them to ancient Greek fashion.

Some say Birkenstocks are uncomfortable and not worth it, while others love and won’t stop wearing them even in the winter, pulling off that sock with sandal look. Are you a fan of these sandals?

Preppy look

One of the main looks that prevails in today’s fashion is the preppy look. In the past years, the preppy look took a turn from the iconic “Gossip Girl” academic fashion to a more edgy look, as seen in Miu Miu’s runways with their signature scholarly outfits.

The preppy look has also been embraced through the “old money aesthetic,” characterized by high society styles, polos, Ralph Lauren pieces and Hamptons-inspired clothing.

Cowboy fashion

The Western aesthetic is on the rise once again. Whether or not you’re into the countryside vibe, the cowboy/cowgirl aesthetic will get to you. From Coachella glittery cowboy hats, fridge everything and cowboy boots to Beyonce Texas-inspired Renaissance Tour outfits, the Western influence has reached 2024 with Louis Vuitton’s cool cowboy outfits.

To be fair, it’s hard not to be swayed by cowboy boots when they’re everywhere, and they seem to pair with anything — even the classic Canadian tuxedo. What are your thoughts about it?

Skinny jeans

We’ve reached the most controversial item on the list: skinny jeans. Back in the 2010s, skinny jeans were the must-have fashion piece, seen on everyone from celebrities to everyday people — including myself. When the pandemic hit, fashion evolved, changing old norms and aesthetics, including the reign of skinny jeans.

Nowadays, the style has shifted to more oversized, baggy jeans, marking a complete 180-degree change. How do you feel about these jeans? Personally, I’m all for the “burn every skinny jeans in sight” movement — don’t hate me for it!

Pattern on pattern

Patterns have always been a fashion staple, from historical designs to the twee aesthetics’ mix of dots, patterns and prints. Lately, fashion has laid off from big patterns on patterns to more refined choices, like stripes, plaid and animal print. Are you into this trend?

After this detailed critique, here comes my question: do you agree with these fashion statements or not? There are always opinions about fashion trends, but, hey, if you love something even if others don’t, go for it! After all, it is often the controversial fashion that makes it to the tabloids.
