Six songs to get you through fall!

Fall is the superior season — knit sweaters, layered clothes and you can drink both hot and cold coffee. No one can change my mind.

But there is the other side of fall — the start of the school term turns into excessive studying, then into sleepless nights, you get it. Throughout the school term, I spend most of my time with my headphones on, so the music I listen to matters. What’s a productive way to listen to music to take full advantage of the season around you? That’s right, curating the perfect fall playlist.

I’ve picked six of my favourite fall songs to inspire your fall playlist creation!

Liquid Smooth — Mitski

You probably know Mitski for “My Love Mine All Mine,” it was one of her songs that blew up thanks to TikTok.

In a few words, this is a gorgeous song. I listened to it religiously last fall and, now, every time I listen to it I think about orange trees — but I also think about my fall elective class. You win some and you lose some.

Alison — Slowdive

An oldie but a goldie, right?

Slowdive is a band from the late 1980s, but they separated six years after their debut album. Now, why did I say “is” instead of “was?” Well, after Slowdive released a title album in 2017, they released a more recent one in 2023 called “Everything is Alive.” They are also kicking off a 10-show U.S. tour this November. I guess never say never!

Fade into You — Mazzy Star

I don’t even think this song needs an explanation. I listen to it while I write articles, take a shower and will probably take it with me everywhere I go.

Mazzy Star is a band from the 1980s formed by David Roback and followed by Mexican-American lead singer Hope Sandavol. Roback passed away in 2020 but Sandoval is still an active member. Sandavol is able to bring you absolute peace and calmness in every one of their songs.

Lithiona — Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) is a man who can truly do it all and his music isn’t short of that. This song is from his latest album, “Bando Stone & the New World.” It’s a beautiful song, you never really expect where it’ll take you.

If you decide to explore Glover’s discography, I also recommend watching his show “SWARM,” it’s a masterpiece!

Humans — Big Thief

Big Thief is one of my favourite bands of all time. This song has all the main elements of a Big Thief/Adrianne Lenker (the lead singer) song — repetition, bright tune, but emotional lyrics.

I suggest you don’t stop at this song when it comes to Big Thief, they’ve got a dozen tunes that can fit into your playlist.

Sailor Song — Gigi Perez

Gigi Perez is an upcoming queer artist who gained a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 with this song this past summer.

This sapphic song explores a heavy but touching theme — the acceptance and expression of her sexuality with another woman. It’s a powerful song delivered by amazing vocals and other musical elements.
