A list made for students, by students.
Learning spaces are essential for maximum productivity. They are a huge factor in student success as they set the mood for mastering the knowledge and skills you need to jumpstart your career. That’s why finding the right study spots that put you in learning mode is a must. Knowing which setting works best for you can do just the trick!
Did you know that Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber have various study spaces on campus to boost your learning productivity?
If you’re hunting for your next pick of study spots around the campus, you have come to the right place! Here are recommendations from Humber students who chose not to gatekeep their favourite study spots.
Lakeshore Learning Commons at L building
The Lakeshore Learning Commons at L building is one of the easily accessible study spots for students since it is located at the heart of the campus. The good news is that the learning space is open 24/7 for students, serving as a dependable area regardless of your studying preferences.
Damilola Osinowo, a human resource management student, swears by this sweet study spot. Osinowo was particularly pleased by the study rooms, which she and her friends often book to do collaborative work.
“We made a project there which got the highest score in the class,” Osinowo said. “There, you can connect your computer because we had to create a whole animation video. Using the screen, we were able to work around the table, which helped us a lot.”
These study rooms at the Lakeshore Learning Commons are available for booking through Humber’s library website. Six study rooms are available with a maximum of six seats, so you can do your group’s brainstorming sessions with ease and with the resources you need.
The L common also features a quiet room equipped with computer cubicles if you need a quiet environment for deeper focus. Computers, printers and photocopy machines also come in handy for passing a report. It really is a one-stop shop! No wonder this is a go-to spot for studying and collaborating.
Room H100 at H building
Room H100’s charm lies in a combination of a full-size window on one side and the campus’ international centre on the other. Squeezed in the middle is a space with long tables and couches, offering another location to learn or feed your concentration.
Ladylyn Laga, a business management student in her third semester, prefers to catch up on her coursework at H100 during her free time. Laga says she loves the space because it isn’t too crowded, so she gets to be in focused mode all the time.
Laga also argues this space has the best view of the entire campus, which is why she keeps coming back. The view of the Lakeshore grounds through the windows showcases the campus’s beauty, a perfect way to rest your eyes after long hours of screen time.
“I could also see some people walking around, students reading or using their laptops, which motivates me to, you know, also read my notes and study,” Laga added.
The attic at G building
If you’re looking for a more private study spot to get into that deep focus, the G building attic is the perfect place for you. For first-year bachelor of accounting student Isabel Sarmiento, this study area is her top pick. Sarmiento is captivated by this learning area because of its secluded and cozy feeling.
“There’s a lot more quiet without having to actually book a study room. Also, a lot of the study rooms have big open windows, like everyone’s looking into it. So I think this is just like a nice, fairly quiet spot,” Sarmiento explained.
The attic is a haven for students who are fond of a private space to do school work on campus.
Another reason highlighted by Sarmiento for the ‘things-to-love-about-the-area category’ is its location. She likes how relatively close this study spot is to other buildings where her classes are. “It’s really easy. Oh, I got a class, I could just go ahead to class. It takes like two minutes,” she shared. The attic is where she spends her vacant time between classes.
You can access this area by heading to the fourth floor of the G building through the stairs (if you want to get your steps in) or an elevator. The attic also has subdivisions that provide a relaxed bedroom atmosphere while still being a step away from your next class.
Open Access Learning Space at F building
F Building is home to the Faculty of Media, Creative Arts, and Design. What makes it unique among the other buildings in the Lakeshore campus is its shared space, which is perfect for your next study session.
The basement level hosts a shared area and a computer lab that can be utilized at any time. Henry Phan, an advertising and marketing communications student, says this spot has seen him through a lot of homework and group activities.
“They have the computers and it’s private. The room is air-conditioned. Everything is good,” Phan said.
Henry’s favourite part about this space? Snacks and drinks are within reach. A tiny cafeteria and vending machines are available when you need a quick bite while studying. If you’re trying to save some bucks, the space is equipped with two microwaves to keep your homemade meal hot. In the basement of F building, you don’t have to worry about keeping your energy at peak performance when finishing an assignment.
IGNITE’s Zen Zone at K building
Naomy Lamontagne, a first-year social service worker student, placed IGNITE’s Zen Zone as her top runner for study spots. Situated in the basement area of IGNITE’s Lakeshore K building, the Zen Zone is designed for students to have a place to relax, meditate and study on campus.
Although it was her first time being at the Zen Zone, Lamontagne was enjoying the tranquillity the room brought.
“I just like how calm and relaxing it is here other than being around a bunch of people. I like that better,” Lamontagne said.
When asked what gravitated her to the place, Lamontagne said her feet brought her to the Zen Zone because she was looking for a calm spot on campus.
“I did come here on a tour, maybe last month, and then I finally came today to check it out,” Lamontagne narrated. She shares that her expectations were definitely met.
More than just being a serene sanctuary on campus, the space has a lot of activities to practice mindfulness. Therapeutic tools present in the space include colouring books and a miniature zen zone to heighten awareness. The space also has a meditation area and bean bag chairs for excellent comfort. You can visit the IGNITE Zen Zone from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

These spots go to show that learning goes beyond the four walls of the classroom and takes place everywhere around the campus. The good news is you are in charge of your own learning.
