“If music be the food of love, play on.”

William Shakespeare

September is officially here, and you know what that means — new classes, new routines, new vibes and of course, a good playlist. Whether it’s a hype jam to wake you up for the 8 a.m. lecture or a song that stares at the 11:59 p.m. deadlines with you, music is basically the backbone of the post-secondary experience.

We went around campus asking students of Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber what they are listening to on their headphones this month.

Here’s the ultimate student-approved, September playlist:

“Rocket Ship” — Future

“It’s just going up, you know? It’s just going up from here,” Josh said, a second-year student in creative advertising, starting his semester on a high note. His go-to is Future’s Rocket Ship, which he blasts on during his commute.

“It’s chill R&B vibes but still motivating”, he said when describing his mood for the September playlist. A perfect mix for a student keeping both grades and energy levels up.

“From The Start” — Laufey

As for Rishan Cholassery, a management studies student, September is more on the softer side. He describes his vibe as “very chill”,  often accompanied by Laufey’s dreamy “From The Start.”

“It’s been stuck in my head for a while now”, Rishan said.

Sometimes finding the perfect song can feel more difficult than rolling above 10 on a d20. That’s why you’ll also catch Rishan tuning into his favourite D&D podcasts from time to time.

“Back to Friends”— Sombr

“Emotional. Sad. Romantic” is how Rita, a second-year digital business management student, described her vibe for September, and her playlist reflects just that.

“Back to Friends” by Sombr is her go-to anthem while walking to campus. (The perfect sadness for fall. Relatable.)

She— Tyler, The Creator

“It’s almost like every day. It’s been like this on repeat”, Angelita said, a first-year student in the social service work program. She is kicking off her first semester at Humber with upbeat music. Her pick? “She” by Tyler, The Creator.

Her vibe?

“It’s more hype, because I’m trying to get myself going for the semester,” she said. Rap, motivation and perfect headphones—a perfect recipe for a confidence boost every first-year student needs.

Snooze with SZA (+ Charlie Puth)

Chilly weather, hot chocolate and an R&B playlist sound like a perfect September for Khan, a fourth-year student in the international business program.

With SZA and Charlie Puth on repeat, and occasional discovery of upcoming artists on TikTok, Khan’s playlist is the vibe for a cozy night.  And when music takes a break, true crime podcasts fill the headphones!

Headphones on, jam on!

Whether it’s blasting Drake (Let’s be real, what’s Toronto without a bit of Drake?) or crying to Laufey, one thing is for sure—Humber and UofGH students aren’t just making it through this fall, they are vibing through it.

So what are you waiting for? Press play and jam out, maybe you’ll find your new go-to anthem.
