Because your first day of internship shouldn’t feel like your first day on Earth.
Yay! You got the internship. Starting your first internship can be a mix of excitement, confusion and “what am I even supposed to do”. You’re finally stepping into a professional space that marks your first step into your career journey. Figuring out routines and trying to make a good impression, all while surviving the summer heat and long commutes, can feel like the most overwhelming thing in the world.
Don’t worry, we have just the perfect no-stress checklist to help you be prepared enough that you can actually enjoy the experience.
Dress smart

Summer internships come with one major challenge: looking professional while trying not to melt in the summer heat.
Think breathable fabrics, light layers and outfits that can transition from outdoor heat to indoor air-conditioned offices.
Confused about what to wear? Aim for a slightly more polished and professional look in your first few days; you can always adjust once you understand the workplace vibe.
Pro tip: Always keep a backup layer like a light cardigan or blazer at your desk. Offices love to pretend it’s winter in mid-July.
Surviving the commute

If your internship is a long commute, this is your chance to romanticize it.
Have podcasts downloaded, create playlists or start that one book that you swore you’d read after finals season. Your commute is the perfect chance to dedicate some “me time” before and after work.
Also, always have a backup plan: offline music, a fully charged phone and maybe even a portable charger. Nothing tests your patience like a dead phone on public transit.
Planning your time

Before you do anything else, learn how to balance your work life and personal life. Internships can take up a big chunk of your day, especially if you’re adjusting to a new routine.
That’s why planning your time matters.
Use a calendar to map out your work hours, fun hours and most importantly, the commute hours.
Yes, you are working, but it’s still summer! Schedule things to look forward to, even if it’s a simple walk in the park.
Connecting with others

Don’t shy away from networking with others. Internships are the perfect opportunity to network without it coming across as forced or awkward. This opportunity is your ultimate learning experience.
You don’t have to know everything. Showing effort and willingness to learn already puts you ahead.
Start small, say hello, ask questions and show genuine interest in others’ work. Most professionals remember what it’s like to be new and are always open to helping if you’re respectful and curious.
Take notes, ask for feedback and pay attention to how things work. Even small tasks can teach you something about communication, teamwork or time management.
Schedule coffee chats to learn about their experiences in-depth. Focus on building meaningful connections because these conversations matter way more than you think.
Your work has value

One thing to understand before starting an internship: Your time matters.
Thousands of students are expected to complete mandatory internships, co-ops, and placements to graduate. This mandatory requirement becomes difficult when it is unpaid. Students have to show up, contribute real work and gain experience while still worrying about rent, groceries or just basic expenses.
As you prepare for your summer internship, ensure:
- Whether your role is paid or unpaid, and what that means for your schedule and finances.
- Set boundaries
- Value your time and effort, even if the system does not reflect that.
And if you are in a paid position, recognize the privilege and still advocate for fairness for others. Because at the end of the day, internships should help you grow, not put you down.
Plan an “end of internship” celebration

A good way to actually enjoy your internship is to have something to look forward to at the end of your internship.
A small celebration, whether that be a trip or a day to fully relax at home. Whatever it is, give yourself something at the finish line. You’ll appreciate it more after weeks of early mornings and busy days.
You are learning

You will not have everything figured out during your first internship, but that’s the absolute beauty of it. It’s all about learning, adjusting and growing into a new version of yourself.
You’ll make mistakes, have awkward moments and probably forget something at least once.
And that’s okay.
Because at the end of it, you’ll have the experience, stories, and much better idea of what comes next. So until then, enjoy the ride and make the most out of it.
