Elevate your watchlist with people on campus.
Picture this: you meet someone new and are getting to know each other better, then all of a sudden, they pop the question, “What are you watching right now?” and your mind goes blank, even though you were binging Netflix until 2 a.m. the night before. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.
That’s why IGNITE went around asking Humber Polytechnic and the University of Guelph-Humber students what they are watching, and let’s just say, the answers did not disappoint.
Fall feels & comfort binges

Gossip Girl is back on the screen for Nes, a second-year creative advertising student.
“It’s such a fall show. They are going back to school, it’s all about that school vibe and it just fits the vibe right now,” Nes said. Discovering it through TikTok clips and memes, Gossip Girl became her favourite fall binge.
Her all-time recommendation? Disney’s Moana.
“It’s my favourite Disney movie, hands down. Everyone should watch it,” Nes said.
Comfort shows seem to be a common theme amongst students. Check out Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family, Friends or The Summer I Turned Pretty for when you just want something familiar on the watchlist.
Netflix nights

With season two just hot off the press and the hype built around it, Abhishek, a global management student, recently finished the first season of Wednesday.
“It’s been all over Netflix, so I just had to check it out. It’s pretty cool. And I’m gonna watch season two now,” Abhishek said.
While waiting for the new episodes to come out, Abhishek recommends his all-time favourite show, Peaky Blinders. “I would recommend Peaky Blinders to anyone.”
Crime, justice & deep analytics

For Fatima, who’s studying community and justice services, crime dramas aren’t just for entertainment, but rather a way to analyze from a different perspective.
“I’m currently watching Dexter, and I love watching it because there’s a lot of crime and violence in it. It kind of gets me out of my world, but also lets me think about different justice perspectives,” Fatima said.
Her rec for Humber and UofGH students looking for something both entertaining and inspiring? Suits.
“It’s very educational, in fact, one of my boyfriend’s friends actually became a lawyer after watching Suits,” Fatima said.
Looking for similar shows? You, True Detective and Criminal Minds are bound to get you hooked.
Reality TV & timeless movies

Charlotte, a media communications student, is diving deep into the early 2000s reality TV with The Real Housewives of Miami.
“I like it because it’s of a different era, and it’s fun to watch early 2000s reality TV,” Charlotte said.
Her recs and rewatches comprise The Hunger Games and Do the Right Thing by Spike Lee.
“I think it is really good if you haven’t seen it before because it’s still extremely relevant today. So I would recommend that to anyone who hasn’t seen it,” Charlotte said.
Emotional rollercoaster, anime style

While the anime fans wait for season two of Mononoke, Leslie, also in media communications, came through with the ultimate anime watchlist.
“I’m currently watching [Mobile Suit] Gundam GQuuuuuuX because my friend is a huge fan, and I watched the premiere movie recently,” Leslie said.
When it comes to rewatches, Leslie is all about their annual lineup of classics: Ghost in the Shell (1995), Revue Starlight, Kageki Shoujo!! and Mononoke.
Their top rec for fellow students? Something that challenges both your brain and your creativity.
“Ghost in the Shell (1995). If you want to get philosophical, that’s the one,” Leslie said.
What’s on your watchlist?

From thrillers to melodramas, Humber and UofGH students have their watchlist stacked. Whether it’s shows used for background noise or movies that keep you on the edge of your seat, sometimes the best kind of self-care is a good binge-watch session.
So, the next time you are stuck finding something to watch, ask around, chances are someone is looking to talk about their new favourite show!
