Making history, one buzzer at a time.
Basketball is full of intense, nail-biting moments. Whether your team is down by two points with only a couple seconds left or you’ve been sweeping the entire game, there are few better victories than that final-second dunk that makes the crowd go wild.
Well, basketball fanatics, if you’re in the mood for some high stake basketball glory—you’ll definitely want to check out the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship tournament, hosted by Humber College, beginning Thursday, March 19. Come one, come all, to cheer on your very own Humber Hawks from the comfort of the North Campus gym.
In anticipation, check out these suspenseful buzzer-beater moments that kept the world at the edge of their seats:
When Michael Jordan took THE shot
Need I say more? This Michael Jordan moment has gone down in history as one of his best. In this 1989 Chicago Bulls vs Cleveland Cavaliers series game, Jordan took this buzzer-beating shot to eliminate the Cavs and go on to win the entire series.
As he’s famously known for his iconic slam dunks, MJ made this shot look easy. How did he hang on to the air like that? The laws of gravity must not apply to him but, nevertheless, this moment deserves to be deemed THE shot by the NBA.
When Kawhi Leonard brought the Raptors to their game seven win
What kind of Torontonian would I be if I didn’t include this iconic moment for the Raptors? Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you know the Toronto Raptors made history by winning their very first NBA championship in 2019. As the NBA’s only Canadian team, they made a name for Toronto by proving that we are small but oh-so-mighty.
Toronto fans can attest that this moment had everyone at the edge of their seats. As Kawhi fell to the floor and the ball bounced against the rim to finally enter, the crowd absolutely lost it, sending the Philadelphia 76ers home in game seven.
When Mo Williams shot a basket from half-court
This play left me shook. Defying all odds, Mo Williams took an impossible shot from WAY past the half-court and it actually got in. Crazy right? I definitely took a doubletake while watching, but there is NO video tweaking here—just pure talent (and maybe luck).
Though the Cleveland Cavs ended up taking the L against the Orlando Magic, this halftime, buzzer-beating moment will forever go down in the books as one of the most impressive.
When this rising star gave seasoned players a run for their money
These rising stars are a force to be reckoned with. On Feb. 14, the 2020 All-Star games kicked off and showcased a wide array of talents from seasoned players and rising stars alike. In the Rising Star game, Luka Doncic brought his team the W by shooting this incredible basket over Trae Young from the halfway line.
Seeing the skills that these players have at such a young age leaves us no doubt that we will be seeing many more amazing moments in the near future. Lucky for you, you won’t have to wait long to see some rising stars—you’ll be able to see Humber’s young talent play on March 19.
When Kobe Bryant proved yet again he was an absolute legend
How could we make a list without including the legend himself, Kobe Bryant? Bryant took the world by storm the moment he stepped on the court, but this moment definitely takes the cake. In his career, he became an absolute master at three-pointers and if this clip isn’t proof of that, I don’t know what is.
To no surprise, this shot brought the LA Lakers to victory against the Miami Heat. Unfortunately, on Jan. 26, 2020 the world lost a legend but his legacy lives on through the tremendous impact he’s had on the NBA.
