“I’m sorry for what I wore when I was cold.”

Any Canadian knows that January almost always has us dressing for the worst conditions. Puffy coats, scarves, and winter boots can leave many feeling uninspired with their outfits. However, there are creative ways around these rather unfortunate weather forecasts.

These Lakeshore style icons proved that winter doesn’t have to limit our style. From colour to layers, check out how Humber students find ways to show off their winter’s best:

Robin de Heer in a colourful sweater

Robin de Heer | Creative Advertising | Humber Exchange Student, First-Year | @robinsandre

Immediately, I was captivated by Robin’s colourful sweater. When he got up for his picture, the outfit only got better! Everything was thought out with this outfit, from the socks to the jewelry. Needless to say, I felt underdressed standing next to Robin.

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“A beautiful coat. It doesn’t need to be warm as long as it’s cute.”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“Generally I don’t. But, if it’s really cold I’ll wear thermal underwear with a cold outfit.”

Devan Diamond sitting in chair with sunglasses

Devan Diamond | Public Relations | Humber Lakeshore, First-Year | @devandiamond

Devan Diamond is in my program, and I knew I could count on him to arrive to class in style. He’s all about the layers; specifically, I find him sporting a vest on the daily. I loved this ready-to-adventure look!

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“My scarves because they keep my throat warm.”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“I like to layer a lot in the winter.”

Tianshui Sheng

Tianshui Sheng | Business Management | Humber Lakeshore, Second-Year

Black and grey is easily my favourite colour combination. Tianshui took winter fashion to a whole new level with this look. The shoes matching the jacket, plus oversized pants with a structured jacket, makes for an aspirational outfit.

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“Snow, because in my hometown we didn’t get much of it.”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“I like to stay home and stay warm.”

Juliana Bacca and Cassidy AndrewsJuliana Bacca (left) | Criminal Justice | Humber Lakeshore, First-Year | @julianabacca_

Juliana stuck out to me while walking by because of her jacket! Winter coats can be the worst. I loved the white trim that really helped contrast the jacket and helped Juliana stand out.

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“My jacket!”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“My jacket helps keep me warm.”

Cassidy Andrews (right) | Criminal Justice | Humber Lakeshore, First-Year | @cass.andrews

Alongside Juliana, Cassidy was sporting some black and white patterned pants. I loved the pop of pattern in this winter look.  As well, the little peep of the turtleneck is not only practical but cute!

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“I like my pants.”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“I keep warm by wearing a jacket and drinking hot chocolate.”

Trilby Bittle wearing a pink coat

Trilby Bittle | Professor, Public Relations

If you know Professor Trilby Bittle, you know she is a style icon. Every class, she’s put together a coordinated outfit. I loved the use of colour in this look! Trilby proves that wearing a skirt in winter is possible.

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“Silver jewelry.”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“I was strictly under a no dress rule; only pants and sweaters. But now, I keep warm with an amazing wool coat that was made in Russia. That paired with boots and a scarf, I found I could keep myself warm.”

Xuanyue Chen

Xuanyue Chen | Accounting | Humber Lakeshore, First-Year | @chenxylookatme

Xuanyue Chen caught my eye with her colours. The scarf really draws your attention, plus it’s practical for this time of year! Xuanyue explained to me that she’s never experienced so much snow as she’s from China; I’d say, she’s found a way to make the snow work for her!

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“Of course jackets and snowshoes.”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“I keep warm by doing more sports and running outside.”

Peter Mayne

Peter Mayne | Film and Media Arts | Humber Lakeshore, First-Year | @emphur

loved how Peter layered in such a fashion-forward way. The pop of the collar here is subtle, yet it is still an impactful way of showing, “I’m warm, yet stylish.” This film and media arts student really knows how to dress for success!

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“My go-to is scarves when it’s really cold.”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“Hot cocoa. I don’t really like wearing jackets to keep warm but if I have to I’ll wear a cool windbreaker.”

Tamaya Henry with yellow and black scarf

Tamaya Henry | Criminal Justice | Humber Lakeshore, First-Year | @empressmaya

Tell me this yellow isn’t everything. This look is super cozy with a pop of colour. Tamaya’s scarf gives us all the Vitamin D we need on a dreary Toronto day. That combined with her infectious smile makes for the perfect look to brighten anyone’s day.

What is your favourite winter accessory?

“Scarves!”

How do you keep warm in the winter?

“I keep warm by not going outside.”
