Master’s of Science? Try Jedi Master.
Think back to when you were eight years old, sitting in your bedroom with your Toys R Us lightsaber, dreaming of becoming a Jedi master.
Did you feel The Force, but couldn’t quite harness its powers?
Well, I’m here to tell you that you can take your Jedi training one step further with some official education.
That’s right. University and college courses are more than just your typical Accounting 101 and Media Ethics.
So, take a break, have some laughs and discover five of the strangest university and college courses to exist.
Prerequisites may be required.
Feel The Force: How to Train in the Jedi Way
Queen’s University Belfast
Okay, so maybe learning how to battle a Sith Lord wasn’t on the syllabus. But, this one-day course, offered back in 2008, promised to teach students the “psychological techniques behind Jedi mind tricks” and if you ask me, that’s pretty much as Jedi as it gets.
Surviving the Coming Zombie Apocalypse
Michigan State University
You’ve just finished binge-watching The Walking Dead. I mean, it’s only logical to start planning for a Zombie Apocalypse – just in case. And by the title of this Michigan State University course, you’re not alone.
Luckily for you, this Multimedia Online Immersive Learning Experience, that aims to understand human behaviour in times of catastrophes – like a Zombie Apocalypse – isn’t just available for students at Michigan State. Check out the course trailer on their website!
There’s no such thing as being too prepared, right?
The Simpsons and Philosophy
University of California, Berkley
Who knew that Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie would be talked about in the same class as Plato, Immanuel Kant and Karl Marx?
I didn’t.
But, that’s exactly what this course, founded in 2003 by Tyler Shore, did and according to The Simpsons and Philosophy website, the course has been “offered to thousands of students over the years.”
Check out the book that inspired the class! Don’t worry, we won’t test you.
Wasting Time on the Internet
University of Pennsylvania
We’ve all been there. Hours spent scrolling through social media, getting lost down a YouTube rabbit hole, and searching “why can’t I sleep?” on our phones at 3 a.m.
Well, apparently a few years ago, you could get credit for doing just that. That’s right, there was an entire class dedicated to wasting time on the internet, and apparently, there were no tests, no exams and no essays, just social experiments.
Not everyone thought the class was a great idea. But hey, at least you wouldn’t have to study.
Puppet Arts
University of Connecticut
This is more than just a course you can take at the University of Connecticut.
That’s right. It’s a full-blown master’s program so you can take your sock puppets and shadow theatre to the next level!
And if this program interests you, don’t worry. You don’t need a specific undergraduate degree to apply! Past students have had undergraduate degrees in English Literature, Music, Graphic Arts and even Political Science and Philosophy.
So, start prepping to knock their socks off at the audition today!
Honourable Mention: Comedy Writing and Performance
Humber College
The Comedy Writing and Performance program that is offered here, at Humber College, is definitely unique.
This very course has made it on the list of “25 Unique (Possibly Even Crazy) Courses of Study” according to TheBestSchools.org in the 24th slot, right above Poultry Science.
So, there you have it, a list of some of the most interesting university and college courses to satisfy all your interests and help you develop essential life skills – like how to survive a zombie apocalypse.
However, for now, I think you should focus on surviving summer classes. It’s probably a little easier than the flesh-eating zombies… or at least safer.
