It’s the fresh start for me.
I’m definitely looking forward to turning the page on 2020 and having a great 2021 – I bet you are, too. We deserve it!
Every year, we often talk about resolutions we want to fulfill in the new year, but let’s be honest – we often fail them all within the first couple of weeks. This year, let’s make realistic resolutions we can work toward throughout the whole of 2021, no matter if we fail or thrive in the beginning. After all, progress takes time, and we have 365 days to try.
With that in mind, here are 10 resolutions you can work toward throughout 2021.
Cut down on your screen time
I think we can all agree that in 2020, our screen time jumped to new heights. With COVID-19, almost everything we do on a daily basis has become virtual. This will most likely continue in 2021, however, it’s important that we actively remember to give ourselves screen breaks. Try disconnecting for a little while every day by setting time limits and doing activities that don’t require a screen like reading a book, playing an instrument, or writing in a journal.
Be more creative
Let your imagination run free and just create! No need to be necessarily gifted at some form of art, you can be creative however you please.
Build something for your house, follow a Bob Ross Painting tutorial, doodle, create a business, come up with a creative solution to a problem, put together a really cool outfit, or make funny TikToks – the options are endless! Think outside the box and push your limits. Allowing yourself to think more creatively can help you in almost every area of your life and who knows, it might even lead to some great new opportunities for your 2021!
Listen to a new song every day
With new music and artists being released every day, as well as millions of songs to already choose from, achieving this resolution should be no trouble.
Starting January 1, try listening to a new song every day. Whether it’s by an artist you already know and love or it’s in a genre that you might have never checked out before, change it up and find some new tunes to add to your playlists. Who knows, you might find a new favourite! After all, a song is only two to four minutes long so what do you have to lose?

Find a physical activity that you enjoy
Every year, people purchase expensive memberships to gyms, and online fitness programs in hopes of getting fit.
This year, increase the chances of making your fitness resolution actually stick by choosing an activity based on enjoyment. Find something you love doing and try making more realistic goals to make sure your new routine will last, especially if you’re new to working out. If you’re searching for new ways to get your sweat on without a gym, these fun ways to replace your Humber Gym workouts from home are sure to give you some new options.
Be more adventurous
Take the leap and try things like expanding your food palate, meeting new people, or even approaching that one special person you’ve always wanted to talk to. Take the leap of faith and trust that everything will work out, the results might be life-changing!
Build your resume
As students, we’re all going to have to get real-world adult jobs in our near future. Whether you already have a lot of experience or not much at all, there’s never any harm in getting out there and getting experiences to prepare you for career success in the working world.
And, it doesn’t necessarily need to mean finding a job – you can also volunteer with different organizations, pick up a new hobby or interest, join clubs, participate in competitions or events, and more. Whatever you choose, IGNITE is here to support you every step of the way.
In 2021, take advantage of all of IGNITE’s classes & events for career building, self-improvement and more to make you every employer’s top choice. If you need some extra help proofing your resume before applying to jobs, Humber Career Services take your resume to the next level.
Improve your cooking skills
If you’re like me, you have a solid rotation of seven meals that you repeat throughout the week. Kraft Dinner and frozen meals can be great, but this upcoming year, make the resolution to learn how to cook more dishes and expand your range. Start small and work your way up and hopefully, before you know it, cooking will be one of the skills you can boast about. To get you started with something easy and healthy, try out these five easy soup recipes you can make any day of the week!
Be more environmentally friendly
It’s important to take steps in your everyday life to be more environmentally conscious. Make little but effective changes in your life by bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, using a reusable water bottle, recycling properly, buying sustainable clothing, switching to walking & biking instead of driving short distances, and even finding creative ways to repurpose your kitchen scraps! After all, we only have one Earth.
An added benefit to all these suggestions? They sometimes come with a cheaper price tag so not only will your wallet be thanking you, but the planet will be too. Plus, we’ve also got you covered for easy ways to make this school year your most sustainable yet.
Get more quality sleep
Sleep is the prime time for your body to repair and recover from all it goes through. Getting enough quality sleep is an essential part of your overall health, and sleep deprivation can lead to serious consequences. As college students, your sleep schedule might look sparse and inconsistent but in 2021, let’s work toward getting more quality sleep at least most of the time. We’ve even put together some tips on how to get better sleep to help you along your journey.
Save some extra money
Saving money is easier said than done when it feels like you have endless expenses to pay for. However, there are many little ways you can save money while on a student budget. Save those extra dollars here and there and in the end, you can treat yourself to something you’ll be extra happy to have saved up for.
