Money, money, money, money, money …

Mr. Krabs

It’s never too early to start saving money, and one of the best ways to start is by building a budget.

Put simply, a budget is a plan that helps you manage your money and figure out how much you get, spend and save. It can seem like such a daunting task, but as students with many expenses to keep track of, there’s no better time to get started.

There’s no need for budgeting to be as complicated as it seems in movies and TV shows – trust us, complicated spreadsheets are a thing of the past. Today, there are so many great apps available to make budgeting easy.

Now you might be wondering which app is best for you? No need to test them all out, I tried out some of the best FREE budgeting and personal finance apps for you! Here’s what I thought:

Mint

When I started my search for the best budgeting app, Mint was the one that came up most as the #1 most downloaded personal finance app.

This free app makes it effortless to stay on top of your money with a quick sign-up and set-up process. After a short set up, the app made it possible to see all of my money in one place, connecting all my accounts and even my credit score for a complete financial picture.

Their budgeting feature made it easy to create simple budgets to effortlessly keep track of or change as time goes on. The platform also provided budgeting tips and advice to help me save AND a daily budget tracker to stay on top of my daily spending.

Wally

Available in 70 countries for over 15, 000 banks, Wally makes for a great financial app no matter where you are in the world (well, almost)!

Right off the bat, when setting up my Wally account, I got to pick my financial priorities to make sure the platform works best for what I need most. The options ranged from following a budget and tracking spending to tracking accounts and reducing debt, which are all great options for students.

Their budget feature was great for tracking my spending, with notifications that helped remind me of all the important things I might’ve forgotten about on my own. Wally also automatically categorized all my spending so I can better keep track of things I’m spending money on, like rent, groceries, clothing and entertainment.

The best part was that the app instantly gave me up to two years of insights based on my spending patterns!
