The struggle is real.

The weather is getting colder, and the snow is starting to fall. What do we do now!? Fear not, everything will be just fine—we will survive the cold. Although chillier weather often requires a change in lifestyle, it can be pretty expensive and stressful for students. You want to look good, feel good, all while still trying to afford Christmas shopping.

If you’re strapped for cash this time of year, you’re not alone! Here are 6 ways to survive the winter chill on a budget:

1. Check out the soupbar at Café Linx

Buying and/or packing lunches definitely add on to those weekly living expenses. Lower those food bills and check out the North campus Soupbar every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. You have a choice of three different organic and non-GMO soups with garnishes. The price? Pay-what-you-can. There are even gluten-free and vegan options.

2. Budget for a winter coat

If there is one thing you’re going to spend that hard-earned money on this winter, it should be a warm winter coat. It’s not the best feeling dropping money on it, but if your budget to find something that’s warm and high-quality, you’ll likely get a few warm and comfortable winters out of it.

3. Hit up that thrift store

Although you might have a nice winter coat, let’s be honest—the more layers the better. Head to your closest thrift store, set an amount of money you’re willing to spend, and grab some layers that are going to keep you warm as can be during those chilly commutes. Sweaters, hats, mittens, scarves—they have it all. Just give it a wash and it’ll be as good as new…for cheap!

4. Stock up on canned goods and warm drinks

Go to your favourite grocery store and purchase all your favourite soups, teas, hot chocolates, and whatever else. All are packed with plenty of nutrients for such a cheap price. Stock up and watch your bill go down.

5. Get those vitamins

As fun as it is to go out, is it really that fun to commute to and from the bar in the snow? I’m gonna go with no. Nights in are so underrated! With the stress of finals and the holidays around the corner, spend some more nights in. Invite your friends over, watch some movies, play some cards or board games. You’ll save money and will probably have a much better time. Plus, you’ll be away from the cold weather!
