The most important relationship is the one you have with yourself.
With everything going on in our busy lives, it’s like we’re constantly moving at a pace that seems hard to manage. However, making time for yourself should always be a priority and makes the world of a difference toward overall wellness.
Taking the time to treat yourself to something that makes you happy is essential. Once you get back to your busy grind, you’ll be able to focus better, be more motivated and overall feel happier. Acts of self-care don’t need to be anything big, little things do the trick just as well.
Looking for small ways to care for yourself at home? Here are eight practices we think you should try out:
Listen to a playlist with all your favourite tunes
Music can bring you so much peace and happiness. Whether it’s a chill mix to help you relax or a mix of all your favourite songs to get you dancing around, music is the perfect way to tune out the rest of the world and jam out.
Do a quick workout
Working out is a great way to relieve stress, feel great and stay healthy. Sometimes all you need is 10 minutes to get your heart rate going, your blood pumping and endorphins kicking in — making you feel happy and motivated. Gyms might be closed but that doesn’t need to stop you from getting a great workout in. Not sure how? Check out our article about fun ways to replace your Humber Gym workouts from home.
Try out mediation and deep breathing
The concept of meditation can be intimidating if you don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing. Thankfully you can try out free apps like Calm or Headspace that will guide you through the process. You can even check out YouTube videos that will have you relaxed in no time.
Go for a walk
Take some time to go outside, get some fresh air and take a walk. The change of scenery and fresh air can help you refocus and refresh so you get back to work with a clear head. Also, getting those steps in is a great option for some light exercise.
Drink some tea
Drinking tea makes for a great and simple way to relax. It can help relieve stress, induce sleep, ease pains, reduce nausea and soothe sore throats. From chamomile to lavender, there are so many tasty options to help you destress. Find the one that best suits your needs and get steepin’.
Read a book
Reading a book can be a great escape from looking at screens all day. Trust me, a break from the blue light emitted from screens is much needed to help you wind down. No matter the genre, books can bring you to new worlds. Whatever you choose to read, practice some escapism by winding down with a good book before bed – it’ll do wonders.
Laugh it out
Laughter is the best medicine! Find a funny movie, TV show or stand-up comedian and laugh all your worries away. Laughing has so many benefits. It can instantly put you in a better mood by releasing endorphins and it can help boost your immune system, and promote overall better physical health.
Create a home spa retreat
Splurging on a professional spa outing might not be in your student budget but you can definitely get the same effect at home. Take some time to run a bath or a longer shower, do a more extensive skincare routine or face mask, and relax.
