But what makes working at IGNITE better than working anywhere else? Let us tell you firsthand. Here are five reasons you should work at IGNITE next year.

Meet new people, and make new friends

The dreaded program bubble can be a problem no matter where you go to school. There is no shame in making close relationships in your program – it’s actually a great idea – but meeting people who are taking different courses can be extremely rewarding. Instead of talking about classes, you end up talking about things that you genuinely have in common.

We get it. School can be costly. Tuition is expensive, textbooks are overpriced, and rent has to be paid. A part-time job is a must for a lot of people, but it isn’t always easy to get to a job due to inconvenient school schedules or lack of transportation. Working for IGNITE allows you to work easily between classes, without having to travel far. IGNITE also recognizes our employee’s commitment to their program, so we are flexible with our hours.

With so many great things offered, it isn’t easy to know about all of them. Working at IGNITE allows you to become an expert in everything IGNITE has to offer. Just be prepared for all the people in your program to flock to you with questions.

Contribute to the growth of your campus

Over the years, your student government has helped shape Humber and Guelph-Humber into a safe, fun, and inclusive place for all students. IGNITE is constantly looking for ways to improve the space students spend so much time in with new initiatives and services. Our part-time staff contributes to the creation and execution of these ideas.

What about my experience at IGNITE?

I have had an incredible year working at IGNITE. Every week I enjoy coming into work and collaborating with different teams to provide the best experience we can for students.

Working as a Web Content Editor aligns perfectly with my aspirations of working in public relations. The job provides me with the opportunity to practice and strengthen my writing style while offering a flexible and enjoyable work environment.

I have had the opportunity to write articles, be featured on IGNITE’s Snapchat, as well as take part in Facebook live-streams with IGNITE executives talking about life at Humber. I have built my resume and refined my professional talents, but above all, I love our people, the fun we have at work, and our diverse community.

But I am just one of almost 100 students who work part-time at IGNITE. Listen to what they say about their experience working here:

Jean-Pierre DeGrasse, Graphic Designer – Lakeshore:

“I like that everyone is friendly. It’s not even like a job, it’s like a family. I like coming into work because it’s an open environment and the full-time staff understand the balance between school and work.”

Scott Hokkanen, Web Content Editor – North:

“Working at IGNITE was an overall great experience for me. As a Journalism student, I’m always looking for ways to add to and improve my professional portfolio. While working as a Web Content Editor at IGNITE I was presented with a lot of really great writing and interviewing opportunities such as the chance to interview Dragons’ Den’s Arlene Dickinson and Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D‘s Brett Dalton. I’m constantly working on different articles focusing on a variety of topics, it’s definitely been a fun, challenging experience.”

Paige Danychuk, Events Team Associate – Lakeshore:

“Coming from a small town, I believe that it can be hard for a lot of students to be introduced to a completely different atmosphere at school while not knowing many people. That’s why I enjoy working for IGNITE’s events team, I’m given the opportunity to help plan events that will bring a variety of students together while helping them get to know what IGNITE has to offer.

Being a part of this team has allowed me to meet and speak with so many interesting and amazing students and find out what they’re truly interested in as well as what types of events they’d like to attend at Humber. I always have such a great time working with this team, and can easily say it has become my second family.”

John Kokkoros, Promotions Team Associate – North:

“Since starting at IGNITE I have developed amazing relationships with people and grown as an individual. I’ve always been an outgoing person and had the intention of running for Vice-President of Guelph-Humber and working at IGNITE helped me become a more creative person, meet new people, and motivated me more to run for VP and win the election.

I want to get into advertising strategy. Brainstorming for events and promotions help me become more creative and find new ways to interact with students. Working at IGNITE has been a fun, refreshing, and great experience and the staff make it even more welcoming.”

Jade Moore, Customer Service Representative – Lakeshore:

“Working at IGNITE has been an amazing experience. I have loved getting to interact with students while also finding out new information about the other services around the school. The staff at IGNITE have become my family and I love working in such a supportive and fun environment.”

Emily Chin, Online Engagement Editor – North and Lakeshore:

“My favourite thing is that I like all of the people I have met here, or that it’s very convenient because it’s on campus… NO, flexibility of shifts.”
