The 5 skills you need to get ahead in life
by Alena Blanes | November 7, 2019

Got skills?

We all know skills are essential in the workforce. You’ve got your writing skills, your public speaking skills, and your skills that remind you to turn off the stove before leaving the house. But have you ever considered the skills they don’t teach you in the classroom?

I’m talking about soft skills.

No, not those fuzzy feelings you get when you see a cute dog. Soft skills are the ones that help you develop a personal brand. They help you practice emotional intelligence and teach you resilience when the going gets tough. Soft skills also help you be resourceful.

Unfortunately, there’s no Soft Skills 101 class at Humber or UofGH. But lucky for you, IGNITE’s SkillsCamp workshop has you covered for all things self-improvement.

After signing up for the FREE seminar on Friday, Nov. 15, get a taste of the 5 skills you need to get ahead in life:

1. Stress Management

At some point or another, we all experience episodes of burnout and mental strain. According to the World Health Organization, stress has been dubbed the “health epidemic of the 21st century.” And for a good reason. With today’s “hustle culture” popularized by social media moguls and self-made entrepreneurs, it can be hard to know when to stop.

If this sounds like you, SkillsCamp is the perfect opportunity to learn skills to keep your performance levels up and stress at a minimum. Burnout, be gone.

2. Productivity

Who doesn’t want to be more productive! But how many of us can actually say we know the secrets of the world’s most efficient workers? Learning productivity skills can help you preserve that precious energy students never seem to get enough of.

Mastering productivity will also give you the skills you need to get more things done in less time. It helps improve your relationships and optimize your life. Sounds like a win-win to us.

3. Empathy

Did you know empathy has risen to the top as the number one critical skill for team leaders? Think about it. If you’ve ever been upset on the customer support line or have had a lousy dinner out, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

If you can understand your team members, you’ll be able to communicate in a way that doesn’t make them want to rip their hair out (or put in their two-weeks notice). In the workplace, empathy can help yield the most significant reward among colleagues, clients, friends and ourselves. And that translates to money in your pocket.

4. Leadership

Quick–what comes to mind when you think of the ideal leader? Everyone has their own definition of leadership. But some of the most common traits are individuals who are inspiring, strategic, and great listeners.

While many think leadership starts in the boardroom, it actually begins within yourself. Once you master self-governance, you can learn to apply that sense of self in your leadership style.

When you know yourself, you’re more likely to create a positive and productive work culture, a place where employees feel valued and heard. And who doesn’t want that?

5. Resilience

Man experiences a metaphorical brain explosion

Here’s a fun one. After researching hundreds of the most successful people in the world, the SkillsCamp team found the number one quality that attributed to personal success was resilience. And it makes sense.

When you’re caught up overthinking or seeking unhealthy coping mechanisms, it can be difficult—if not impossible—to keep going. Developing resilience not only helps you manage stress but supports healthy mental and physical habits.

These tactics help you bounce back quicker. Suddenly, things don’t seem so unbearable. Sure, you messed up, but you’ll never move forward while looking behind you.

Now that you know the skills to get ahead, know the secrets to achieve them at SkillsCamp. On Friday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., students will have the opportunity to master the soft skills they need to hack the system and succeed.

What are you waiting for? Grab your FREE tickets to SkillsCamp now and learn the industry secrets to success.
