Let’s get physical.
If you’re anything like me, the last week has consisted of sleeping in until noon, eating up all the good isolation snacks, and switching between Netflix and TikTok for hours. As nice as it’s been to relax for a few days, there’s only so much social-distancing you can take before going stir-crazy.
Although we can’t head to the gym or play a sport with our friends like the good ol’ days, there are lots of other ways you can stay active amidst a pandemic; and if there was ever a time to sneak in a workout, it’s now. Working out contributes to overall health and helps to maintain a sturdy immune system.
Getting active is great for both physical and emotional results. If you’re feeling lethargic and sad just laying around all day, pop in a sweat-session! You’ll be able to feel the impact a 15-minute workout will have on your mood for the rest of the day.
From jumping jacks to hiking, add these activities into your daily isolation routine:
1. At-home workouts
Citizens in Spain and Italy have been on lockdown following the outbreak of COVID-19 in their countries. To stay active, an aerobics instructor from Seville, Spain, got on his best workout attire, climbed to the top of a rooftop in his apartment complex, and began instructing a whole workout class for his neighbours to participate in.
We might not all be lucky enough to have a fitness instructor living nearby for personal classes, but we do have the internet. From YouTube videos to Pinterest, there are a plethora of resources out there to find some killer workouts you can complete at home with no equipment.
Some of my favourite at-home workouts include:

2. Walk, run, bike, or hike
According to both the World Health Organization and the Ontario Ministry of Health, when social-distancing or on self-isolation you are advised not to leave your house to go to the mall or work, for example. However, going outside on your own and avoiding parks with large crowds is a-okay!
This opens up many options for how you can stay active and not feel so couped up while protecting yourself and those around you. Walks, runs, bike rides, and hikes are all activities to get you moving and give you a breath of fresh air!
3. Video games
Dust off the ol’ Wii and get your balance board out, it’s time to get fit! Traditional video games, like Super Smash Bros., won’t burn too many calories, but with technology like the Nintendo Wii, Kinect for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation Move, you can move and groove along to your favourite games.
A study found that those who played Wii Sports boxing burned an average of 248 calories per hour. Active video games such as Just Dance, Wii Sports, and Mario and Sonic at the 2014 Winter Games (Sochi), can give you hours of nostalgic entertainment while you stay active.
4. Clean your space
When stuck in isolation, there are two kinds of people: the ones who clean every nook and cranny to keep busy, and the ones who ignore any form of mess to avoid getting out of bed. I identify with the latter.
No matter how easy it can be to get lost in the clutter, cleaning your space is beneficial both mentally and physically. A study found those who mindfully washed their dishes reported a 27 per cent decrease in nervousness. With the thousands of headlines we’re inundated with, reducing our nervousness is the least we can do for ourselves. Whether it’s vacuuming or moving your room around, refresh your space to get moving and give yourself some clarity.
No matter if you have two-left-feet or move like Derek Hough himself, dancing is good for the soul. This heart-warming activity requires nothing more than your favourite tunes and some killer moves. Whether you’re grooving in front of the mirror or learning a TikTok dance in your spare time, dancing is a great low-impact cardio workout.
Go ahead, dance like no one is watching, because well, no one really is!
Social-distancing isn’t the end of the world. There are lots of ways to keep your routine intact and stay motivated through these hard times. Keep moving, keep your distance, and keep washing your hands! You got this.
