Lakeshore’s new campus fitness complex has been open for almost two months, since September 12th.
We wanted to hear student opinions about the new facilities, so we went to the complex to ask student gym-goers about their experiences. Although it is difficult to convince gym-goers to stop their workout to take part in an interview, we found a few students willing to share their experience.
Here is what they had to say:
“The facilities are amazing. Ana and I come early in the mornings, before our nine o’clock class, so it’s always quiet. There is tons of room, and so many different machines to use. The changerooms are not the cleanest, but what can you expect from a male changeroom?” – Jordan
“I agree with Jordan, the building is amazing. The amount of space is great and one of my favourite parts of the building is the view. I haven’t had a chance to take any classes yet, but I am excited to try some in the future.” – Ana
“I am enjoying it a lot. I have been here around five times and taken many of the classes. It is nice because other gyms don’t always have classes, so it’s nice as students to be able to take advantage of that. It’s nice that I can come here between and after my classes as well. It’s convenient.” – Sara
“I like to come here to work out with my buddies. It’s a great way to keep in shape. I try to come most days in the evening. It’s nice to have a social area on campus that I can hang out with friends from my program, without being in a classroom. ” – Mack
To get a better idea of how the gym was received overall, we asked a staff member at the complex how they felt students were enjoying the new facilities, and how the new gym compares to the old one:
“For the most part, it has been really, really good. Everyone seems to be liking it. It is way bigger, way better. There is way more equipment. You can’t compare it at all.”
So, how can you make use of these facilities?
A gym membership is included in all Humber and Guelph-Humber student fees. All you need to do is go into the building, sign a form and then show them your student ID card with a copy of your timetable and you’re good to go. Easy! (I did it, and it literally took five minutes…)
If you are looking for information regarding programming at the facility, check out the Fitness section of Humber’s website. Or, just go in and talk to the staff, they have been extremely friendly and helpful in all my interactions with them.
