Campus Life
Round-up of the best 5 music festivals in the GTA this summer
by Ally Buso | April 12, 2019

Festival season is here!

The semester is almost over! Do you know what that means? Well, for most of us, it’s spending four months working to pay for school next semester. BUT, just because there are 9-5’s ahead of us doesn’t mean the whole summer has to be all work and no play. Why not take a weekend off to hang out with your squad and listen to some amazing music! Getting in those festival vibes is my favourite part about the summer.

Whether you’re seeking out a weekend adventure or just an afternoon excursion, there’s something for every music taste and budget.

Here’s  a lineup of the best 5 music festivals to hit the GTA this summer:

1. Veld Music Festival | Aug 3 – 4

The 8th annual Veld Music Festival is the place to get your electronic and hip hop fix. Veld will be featuring some big names including headliners Cardi B, Kygo, Skrillex and Tiesto. The fun kicks off at Downsview Park. Tier 1 tickets are already sold out but Tiers 2 and 3 are still available for purchase as well as VIP. Since this is a festival that will be serving alcohol, you have to be 19+ to enter. For more information on the location and to buy tickets, please visit the Veld Festival website.

2. Canadian Music Week | May 6 – 12

The Canadian Music Week festival has a little bit of everything! This week-long event features acts from a variety of different music genres and brings together pros and local bands alike. There will be over 800 different acts performing at various locations across the city over the course of the week.

There are three ways of getting into the festival.

You can either buy tickets to the individual venues if you only want to see one artist. If you want the full experience, you can buy $75 wristbands that get you into all venues for the entire week.  There is also a VIP wristband option for $150, which will fast track you through the lines and give you access to special concert series only available to VIP wristband holders! For more information about venues, the lineup and pricing, check out the CMW website!

3. NXNE | June 7 – 16

NXNE returns to Toronto again this summer for another wild show. This event brings together great music, e-sports, comedy, and more for an epic party. NXNE will be taking over Yonge Street to Queen Street for 10 whole days! The best part about the event is that it is completely free! You have the option of purchasing an affordable $29 wristband which will fast track you into the events, but it is completely optional. While the lineup hasn’t officially been announced yet, keep an eye on the NXNE website for more information and a list of who performed last year.

4. Toronto Summer Music Festival | July 11 – Aug. 3

If modern music makes you scratch your head, then the Toronto Summer Music Festival is for you. The TSM brings together some world-class classical music performers for concert series, guest lectures, and masterclasses. This year’s theme is Beyond Borders, which seeks to celebrate musical influences from across the world. Tickets for the event can either be purchased individually or as a package. Student discounts are available too! Tickets must be purchased either in-person or over the phone. For more information, visit the Toronto Summer Music website.

5. Rockstar Energy Disrupt Tour | July 3

If you find pop/hip hop music completely inexplicable and classical puts you to sleep, be sure to check out the Rockstar Disrupt Tour. While not technically a multi-day festival, this event features a line up of The Used, Thrice, Sleeping with Sirens, Atreyu and more which would have made my high school emo self drool. This event will be taking place at the Budweiser Stage. General admission tickets can be bought for $45 each on Ticketmaster. For more information about the event please check out the Disrupt Tour page.
