Family, Familia, Famile!
Families come in all shapes and sizes, but if we’re lucky they share the common trait of being the group of people you can always rely and depend on. We grow up spending so much time with our families, that it can be a major culture shock when we move across the province, country, or world to go to school. Home sickness is a common experience for College & University students, but there is plenty that you can do to cope with feelings of home sickness.
For those of you that can’t make it home for Family Day, here are our best tips for keeping up with the family while you’re away at school.
Talk face-to-face with FaceTime or Skype
In this futuristic year that is 2017, we have the ability to speak face-to-face rather than over the phone. Using FaceTime or Skype is a great way to have a quality conversation with your loved ones.
Get involved on campus
Sometimes staying busy and having fun are the best things to battle home sickness. There are plenty of jobs on campus and having a little extra money and meeting new people can help distract you from missing your family. There are also a lot clubs you can join for all sorts of interests where you can meet like-minded people and have plenty to write home about. There are also some awesome IGNITE events like the NBA 2K Tournament and IGNITE Real Talks !
Send your siblings a playlist
If you have a similar taste in music, make your siblings a playlist of the best songs you’ve found since leaving for school. Take the time to put together a digital iTunes or Spotify playlist, 90’s style, and your loved one will be thinking of you when grooving to the music.
Make fun plans for when you’re all back together
Even though you might be away for large stretches of time, plan ahead and make fun plans for when you’re reunited. Plan a party, barbecue or a game of golf; anything that can make the best of the time you have together.
