by Neetika Chohan | September 26, 2016

Are you tired of your everyday routine? Looking for an alternative form of fun besides video games? Are you a closet board game fanatic, but can’t find anyone with the same interests?

Well look no further than Humber North, where veteran club Table Tops has returned to deliver another year of interactive and electronic-free fun!

Table Tops was established to encourage students to unplug from their technology-filled lives and indulge in a variety of tabletop games with like-minded individuals.

As current club president, James Grant-Henderson says, “[Table Tops] lets people de-stress, gives them a chance to get away from their phones, get away from their electronics and, have fun.”

The club has two branches: one dedicated to collectible card games and the other for board games. If your interests rest in card games, then you can expect duel matches featuring a number of fan favorites, including ‘Yu-Gi-Oh’ and ‘Magic: The Gathering.’ Board game enthusiasts can revel in fantasy-themed games like ‘Ultimate Werewolf’ and ‘Game of Thrones,’ but don’t be discouraged if that’s not your jam! Familiar games like ‘Monopoly’, chess and checkers are popular selections among club members.

This year, students can anticipate a variety of exciting activities, including an upcoming Magic: The Gathering tournament happening at IGNITE’s Comic Expo on October 3rd at the North Campus. Other activities to look out for include Sci-Fi horror themed games near Halloween, including ‘Betrayal at House on the Hill’ and ‘Arkham Horror.’

So what type of members is Table Tops looking for? Grant-Henderson says, “Anyone and everyone who enjoys having a fun time without their cellphones, without their laptops, and just enjoys sitting down, playing a board game and having fun.” The club welcomes students who’ve never played any type of tabletop game, offering to teach those interested in learning!
