Back to school shopping on a budget

by Raveena Maharaj

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…?

Back to school season is here and you know what that means: it’s time to do some shopping! I always feel the urge to buy new things when September comes around, but then I remember the tuition I have to pay and realize that I shouldn’t be spending money on new pens that I’ll probably lose within a week.

Chances are, most of you can relate. That’s why we’ve come up with a few ways to help you save some cash while getting what you need for school:

Make a list…

…and stick to it! Whether it’s clothing or stationary, it helps to gather things you already have around your house. You’d be surprised at how many things you already own. After looking at what you have, make a list of what you still need. Next, decide how much you’re willing to spend and stick to it.  That way, you’ll save time both time and money.

Discounts for days

A huge benefit of being a student has to be the discounts! There are some places you can flash that student card and save some serious dollars. If you’re looking for laptops or other electronics, be sure to check out Best Buy and Apple to take advantage of their student discount programs and their refurbished products. You can also get an SPC card which gets you discounts at dozens of stores.

Don’t be afraid to shop at stores like Dollarama or Miniso because they sell the same items found in office supply stores, but for a much better price. You can also look for coupons/discounts on sites like Retail Me Not, Web Saver, Go Coupons, and on apps like Flipp and Honey.

Save on Textbooks

If you need to buy textbooks for class, make sure you check out used bookstores, shop online, and visit the library to explore your options. You can almost always find cheaper textbooks this way. Another option would be to rent your textbooks from the bookstore. It costs a lot less to rent your books than to buy them. Best part? You won’t have to worry about getting rid of them after the semester is done.
