All of the feels on Valentine’s Day
by Scott Hokkanen | February 13, 2017

Will you be my Valentine?

It’s common for people to catch feelings when Valentine’s Day comes around. Whether you already have a special someone and it’s your big chance to show them how you feel, or you think that it’s overrated, everyone seems to have an opinion on Valentine’s Day.

We spoke to several Humber and Guelph-Humber students to see how they feel about Valentine’s Day.

Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants gives lovey eyes with cartoon hearts surrounding him

Aja, Business Administration-Accounting

“I think Valentine’s Day can be fun, depending on if you’re in a relationship, but you shouldn’t just have one day where you show your love, it should be everyday – but it’s still nice.”

Zach, Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training

“I think Valentine’s day is stupid, it’s pretty redundant, if you love people you should try and show them everyday.”

Angry Cat, hiding from raining hearts under an umbrella

Adam, Journalism

“I think it has turned from a thoughtful celebration of romantic love into a shameless consumer holiday that has managed to successfully put a price tag on love. I also think it is directly responsible for more arguments and fights within couples than almost anything else. I once told a girlfriend of mine very early in the relationship that I fundamentally disagreed with celebrating Valentine’s Day and that I could promise her then and there that I would not be buying her flowers or chocolate or taking her out to dinner or whatever. She agreed with me and told me she didn’t expect anything on Valentine’s Day, by which I was greatly relieved. Then Valentine’s Day comes around, and I live up to my promises, and she proceeds to get very angry with me for not showing my love to her on Valentine’s Day by not getting her anything or taking her out or anything.”

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Dancing from La La Land

Leigha, Journalism

“I like Valentine’s Day, I think it’s cute. I don’t think you need a specific day to show your love, but why not do it anyway. I don’t think there’s any harm in having a special day dedicated to love.”

Jack, Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training

“I think that every day should be Valentine’s Day if you really care about someone.”

Barack Obama complimenting Michelle Obama on her outfit

SarikaL, Paralegal Education

“I don’t know to be honest, I feel like a long term relationship should have long-term progress and not just happen on one day.”

Rebecca, Pre-Service Firefighter Education & Training

“I think that Valentine’s Day is rubbish, I think it’s stupid I don’t really see the point in it.”
