Campus Life
Adjusting back to school after Winter Break
by Scott Hokkanen | December 7, 2016

It can be tough to get back into the swing of things after a long relaxing break from school.

Whether you’re eager to get back to the books, or wish the break was a little longer, it’s not always easy to transition back into campus life. For some it may even be their first time acclimating to a College or University environment.

The Canadian Organization of University and College health says that 90% of students feel overwhelmed at some point during the school year. So if you’re feeling a little stressed or overwhelmed and want to talk about it, check out the IGNITE’s Student LifeLine. One of our trained mental health professionals can give you some advice on how to cope with things that are causing you to feel stressed.

Whatever your situation may be, here are some tips to make sure you hit the floor running in the winter semester.

Find out where your classrooms are before the first day of classes.

It’s never fun to be running around searching for your classrooms on the first day of the semester.  The stress of not being able to find the room, and walking into class late are a common and avoidable problem for College and University students. Check out your Campus Map so you know where to go, come day one.

Get all of the books and supplies you need.

Whether you need to stock up on school supplies, or get some cozy Humber or Guelph-Humber gear to stay warm in the cold weather, the Humber College Campus Bookstore is the best place to find all of your one-stop shopping needs. If you’re shopping on a budget, check out some back to school money saving tips.

Get a work out in.

If you’re like me, and you always seem to eat too much of all the amazing food that is around during the holiday season, burn off some of those extra holiday calories at the Humber Fitness Centre. The facilities are great at both campuses; in fact Lakeshore just got a new complex!

Reach out to your professors

Many programs offers pre-semester meet and greets with your program’s faculty, so you can get to know your instructors. Or you can always send an email to introduce yourself. It never hurts to start forming a rapport with your profs early, especially if you’re looking to get a reference from them! If anything they can tell you some ways to prepare yourself for the semester and you’ll be less nervous for the first day!
