Campus Life
9 upsides to having a remote semester
by Gabby Dumonceaux | July 28, 2020

“Different” doesn’t mean “worse.”

It’s registration season at Humber and UofGH. That means it’s time to pick your classes, shop for textbooks, and—perhaps most importantly—mentally prepare yourself for a mostly remote Fall semester.

If you’re nervous about transitioning to this new format, you’re not alone. Many students have expressed fears and concerns about moving to remote learning. But, it’s natural to be afraid of change and the uncertainty that comes with it.

The real task is finding the positives in your situation.

Lucky for you, that’s exactly what IGNITE is for! Here are 10 upsides to having a remote semester:

1. You’ll have better breaks

Natalie Dormer eats an apple in a hammock.

How annoying is it when you have an hour between classes? It’s not enough time to go home—but, you don’t have anything to do on campus, either.

Say goodbye to that struggle! You can make the most of your breaks when learning online. Cook a meal, catch up on your favourite TV show, even fit in a quick workout—the choice is yours.

2. You might learn more

Millie Bobby Brown imitates an explosion.

Some research shows students retain 25-60% more information learning remotely compared to learning in a classroom.

That means you can get in the know without getting out of bed.

3. You won’t need to commute

A sloth types on a computer and sleeps in bed.

So long, TTC delays. See you later, rush hour traffic.

When your bedroom is your classroom, you’ll save both time and money on transit.

4. You can sleep in

Donald Duck goes back to bed.

Since you won’t need to commute, you’ll be able to catch some extra Zzz’s in the morning.

Class starts at 9 a.m.? You can wake up at 8:55 and still be on time.

5. You’ll build skills that help you get hired

A gift with the words, "You're the total package".

Because remote learning is mostly independent, it requires more self-discipline and time management skills.

These are great resumé builders that’ll help you stand out from the pack when applying for that first job post-grad.

6. You can study anywhere

Spongebob Squarepants wears glasses and flips through a book.

All you need to attend a remote class is an internet connection. Other than that, where you learn is up to you!

Listen to lectures in your living room. Present a project on your porch. Finish your finals on your front lawn–you get the picture.

7. You’ll have a more flexible schedule

If you need to get your classwork done first thing in the morning so you can work during the day, you can do that. If you’re busy until the evening and want to study at night, you can do that too.

Remote learning lets you work around your other commitments.

8. You’ll help the planet

Are you looking for ways to live more sustainably? Well, you can go ahead and add taking online classes to the list!

Remote learning is super eco-friendly: fewer commuters lead to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and online assignment submissions mean less ink and paper is wasted.

Go green by learning through a screen.

9. You’ll still have access to on-campus resources
