6 things to look forward to at Humber & Guelph-Humber this year

by Miriam Mohamadi

The new year is here and there’s lots to be excited about

We think that most Humber and Guelph-Humber students would agree that the Fall 2017 semester was a tricky one to navigate. The good news is that IGNITE has lots planned for the new year that will help make this semester an epic one. The winter semester is going to be jam packed with exciting things that you can take part in.

Here are 6 things to look forward to at Humber and UofGH this year:

Need to blow off that exam stress? Or just looking to start the year off in a big way? You should check out IGNITE’s annual Frost event on January 12th. Frost will be the ultimate party with four DJs, spinning four different sounds, in four different rooms at Universal Event Space (6250 Highway 7, Vaughan, ON). The four rooms will feature the following sounds:

  • Country and top 40
  • South Asian music featuring dhol drummers
  • Soca and reggae
  • Hip hop

Sounds great right? Well, it gets better! This epic night is FREE for all Humber and Guelph-Humber students. Here’s a recap of Frost 2017 to get you excited for what’s to come.

Real Talks

IGNITE’s Real Talks is a student favourite that brings in inspiring guests from all backgrounds and industries to campus to teach students. Our first Real Talks of the year will feature Charlamagne tha God talking about  issues related to hip-hop, race, society, and politics.

Previous Real Talks events have brought in the likes of Kaitlyn Bistowe from The Bachelorette, Arlene Dickinson from Dragons Den, OVO manager Drex Jancar, and more. While our previous Real Talks have been pretty amazing, IGNITE’s Real Talks events for the Winter semester are going to be bigger and better than ever. We’ve got an exciting line up that you’ll definitely not want to miss. Stay tuned on our events page for Real Talks speaker announcements. Want a taste of what’s to come? Check out last years Real talks event for International Women’s Day with Kaitlyn and Arlene.

IGNITE’s Contest

If there’s one reason to be excited for the new semester, it’s that you could win $5,000! If you’re a new student or did not participate in IGNITE’s contest in the fall semester, you are eligible to enter for the $5,000 grand prize. All you have to do is fill out IGNITE’s short survey to be entered. The survey opens January 15th and closes February 9th, so keep an eye out for an email inviting you to complete the survey.

Winning $5,000 has never been so easy.

Health and Dental 101

Did you know that if you’re a full-time Humber or Guelph-Humber student you’re automatically covered by IGNITE’s insurance plan? If you didn’t, or have some questions about your plan, then you’re going to want to look out for the Health and Dental 101 Fair happening on Tuesday, January 30th at the North Campus and on Wednesday, February 7th at the Lakeshore Campus. Drop by to brush up on your insurance knowledge and to learn everything that you need to know about the plan you’re enrolled in. The fair will also have giveaways, massages, and activities.

Looking to get involved on campus? There are plenty of clubs you can join in the winter semester. Joining a club is a great way to make friends and spend time on campus. Whatever it is that you’re into, we’ve probably got it. You can check out what clubs are offered at your campus here. Don’t see anything you’re interested in joining? You can start your own club by filling out a Clubs Application Form.

Come out to IGNITE’s Clubs Day to meet new people and learn more about the clubs you’re interested in. Clubs Day will be held at Lakeshore Campus on January 30th in the AB cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at North Campus on January 31st in the Student Centre from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
