Now that you’ve been at Humber of UofGH for atleast a semester, you know what the student experience is like. Maybe it’s given you some ideas for improvements you’d like to see around campus. Whatever the case may be, being attuned to what’s happening around your school makes you a great candidate for any IGNITE position!

So if you want to get involved around the Humber and University of Guelph-Humber community, but are still on the fence about whether or not you should run in the elections this year, you’ve clicked on the right article! Here are the top 5 reasons why you should run in IGNITE elections:

1. Change your campus

Students interested in running for President, Vice President, or Board of Director commit their time, skills, and ideas to bettering the Humber and Guelph-Humber community. IGNITE executives play an important role in shaping student life. They represent students’ concerns and create initiatives to help tackle them. BODs make sure that IGNITE stays on track by adhering to its mission, vision, and values. This includes budget concerns, strategic planning, and representing the student body.

Execs work on projects year-round to help support students, and if you’ve got enough determination and are willing to work hard, the possibilities of what you can do are endless! For example, this year’s President, Monica Khosla, has been working on her initiative to increase accessibility on campus. She has been hosting focus groups across all campuses and is hoping to instill real change at the institution!

2. Grow as a person

Taking on new challenges encourages you to learn more about yourself, your school, and the world around you. It also helps to unveil talents and skills you may not have known you had. Being part of the IGNITE team gives you the opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills. It also allows you to network with people from all campuses. You’ll be able to form new connections, and get feedback from students regarding important decisions.

Leadership positions help prepare you for future challenges by teaching you practical skills and increasing your employability. They are great practice for your future career path. Bonus? It shows employers that you are able to handle a variety of tough responsibilities.

IGNITE recognizes that being a leader on campus is a big time commitment. That’s why we offer competitive rates to help ease your financial worry. Maybe by the end of the term you’ll finally be able to take that trip you’ve been planning to Cuba!

4. Work with amazing part-time and full-time staff

IGNITE staff are mainly students and few full-timers who work in the Services, Events, and Communications departments. You’ll meet people that work with social media, digital design, content writing, and events that have many different skills to share. This will give you the chance to learn new things you may not have gotten the chance to do before.
