Know your rights – Guelph Humber

by Jamie Brackpool

Do you know your rights? As a Guelph-Humber student you have many rights and chances are you didn’t even know about most of them. Our ‘know your rights‘ page explains everything you need to know about this subject, but we’ve pulled some of the most important highlights for you. Here are 5 things you’re entitled to as a student at GH…

Fighting academic misconduct:

Have you been accused of academic misconduct? If you have, then you have the right to make both an informal and formal appeal. First, you should make an informal appeal to the responsible faculty member or decision maker. If your concern is not satisfactorily resolved, you have the right to make a formal appeal with the Campus Registrar.

Undergraduate degree regulations:

Do you have any serious/special medical, mental or sympathetic circumstances that would require you to extend a deadline, drop a course late, leave for a semester, or continue your schooling on a probationary position? If so, you have the right to have inform the faculty member in charge.

Tuition refunds:

Students changing from a full-time to part-time status, dropping to three or fewer courses in a given semester, have the right to a refund.

Course requirements:

Did you know that you have the right to request a course requisite be waived? Students also have the right to request an opportunity to complete final course requirements after the end of the semester.

For any course work, students have the right to have a minimum of 72 hours schedules between when an exam is issued and when it is due.

Final exams:

Most people don’t know this, but students have the right to request access to final exams and assignments. Any materials directly related to these final exams and assignments are available to you after they write a request to the faculty member and/or program head. This request must be made by the fifth day of class in the next semester.
