IGNITE Elections: How to stay informed

by Kayzia Boilard

In case you haven’t heard, IGNITE’s Elections are coming up!

You’ve probably noticed the posters plastered all around your campus and had candidates approach you to talk about the upcoming IGNITE Elections. As students it’s important to be informed about your candidates, after all, these are the students that will be representing you and advocating on your behalf next year.

We’ve organized a list of ways that you can stay up-to-date with the candidates and events leading up to the elections:

1. Think about what matters to you

Elections are all about voting for the representatives that best embody your values. In order for you to make the best decision when it comes to election day, you’ve got to know what matters to you in an IGNITE representative, and which candidate’s platforms best match that.

2. Attend the Election Forums

On Wednesday, March 1st at Lakeshore and on Tuesday, March 7th at North, Election Forums are being held. This is where you can listen to candidates speak about their platforms, and more importantly, ask them questions. Be sure to attend so that you’re in the know!

3. Contact or approach candidates

The best way to understand what matters to a candidate and have your questions answered is to speak directly to that candidate. Whether you approach them at school, or send them a friendly e-mail, don’t be shy to reach out to candidates for answers!

4. Talk about it with friends

Another great way to stay informed is by discussing candidates and their platforms with your fellow students. Though you may end up voting for different candidates, talking with friends about issues around your campus and the candidates in the running might help you learn something or have a different point of view. This way, not only will you be more informed, but you’ll also learn what other people think needs changing around school, which will help you have a broader outlook.

This is because we’ve got everything from the events leading up to the elections, to lists of each position along with the candidates who are running for them and their platforms. You’ll never miss an important event by checking our website!
