IGNITE Real Talks: Jameela Jamil ft. Najwa Zebian

Thursday, March 5, 2020
Doors: 11:30 a.m. | Show: 1 p.m.
IGNITE Student Centre (KX101) | North Campus

In celebration of International Women’s Day, actress and activist Jameela Jamil is coming to Humber to share her drive for making a difference.

Born and raised in England, Jamil first gained recognition as a presenter on the popular British breakfast television show, Freshly Squeezed. Her lovable personality quickly won her a spot in the hearts of viewers worldwide, and in 2016 she was cast in the award-winning show, The Good Place. Recently, she’s jumped back into her hosting role, fronting the TBS late-night game show The Misery Index and frequently appearing on NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly.

However, Jamil’s accomplishments extend far beyond the big screen. She’s a two-time cancer survivor, prominent feminist, and the founder of the revolutionary body positivity platform, I Weigh.

I Weigh is a global community that challenges toxic beauty standards and helps marginalized voices reclaim their identities. It places a special focus on changing societal perspectives about women’s bodies, as Jamil herself has struggled with an eating disorder.

The multi-talented actress and activist is no stranger to the newsroom, either. She’s also an established journalist for Company Magazine, having been nominated for columnist of the year at both the Professional Publishers Association Awards and the British Society of Magazine Editors Awards.

Movie star, wordsmith, visionary — Jameela Jamil truly does it all. Come to this Real Talks to hear how she finds balance while achieving her goals.

But wait, there’s more! Jamil will be joined by Lebanese-Canadian author and educator Najwa Zebian, whose advocacy for equality and mastery of the written word has turned her into an inspiration to communities around the world.
