The 2016/2017 athletics season is approaching, and there is a lot to get excited about considering the long list of impressive accolades that Humberâ€™s athletes collected last year.
In 2015/2016 Hawks athletics surpassed Seneca College in the all-time provincial medal count, taking the top spot as Ontarioâ€™s most prestigious OCAA athletics program.
With a rich history of excellence, the expectations are high for this yearâ€™s athletics programs. Here are eight Humber sports teams that you should definitely watch out for in the upcoming year:
In 2016 the Women’s basketball team won their second straight OCAA national championship, and captured their first ever CCAA National Championship off of a heroic game winning shot by Ruth Holland in the dying seconds of the game. In 2016 the Womenâ€™s program finished the year undefeated in both OCAA and CCAA competition. Get your tickets now because the Women’s Basketball team plans to put on a show this year.
For the fourth time in Humber athletics history, the Hawks basketball teams both won OCAA championships in the same season.Â Lead by veterans; Gibson Eduful (Point Guard), Tyrone Dickson (Power Forward) and Ancil Martin (Small Forward), the Hawks have a genuine chance to win their 15th provincial championship.
The Womenâ€™s Volleyball team is currently on a highly-renowned OCAA win streak that stretches over six seasons and currently sits at 109 games.Â On top of their dominance over their provincial opponents, the Hawks also won their first ever CCAA bronze medal in 2016.Â Led by returning star Captain Alley Newman there are lofty expectations to build upon last yearâ€™s highly impressive campaign.
Humberâ€™s badminton program has dominated itâ€™s provincial competition for the better part of a decade, and at last yearâ€™s OCAA championship the Hawks brought home six medals; five Golds and one Bronze.Â In 2016 two-time national player of the year Olivia Lei won her second national championship in Womenâ€™s singles, she is the first Hawks badminton player to win in the same discipline: in back to back years. In a rematch of the 2014-2015 OCAA championship, the 2016 Men’s soccer team battled their rival Algonquin Thunder, with a provincial title up for grabs.Â The Hawks came out victorious in a 3-0 win, capturing their ninth OCAA championship.Â Riding their momentum out of the provincial championships, the Hawks went on to capture their fifth national championship. Â With several returning players, the menâ€™s soccer program should be considered a favourite to win another national title.
In 2016 both the menâ€™s and mixed teams won OCAA bronze medals. Â Jonah Paquette and Abbey Oâ€™Keefe were named championship all stars.Â At the CCAA national champships, the menâ€™s curling team battled back from a loss to Sault College in pool play, to beat Sault 8-4 in the final match to win their first national championship.Â With several talented teams in the Curling program, the Hawks have strong hopes for another successful season.
In 2016 the Hawks menâ€™s baseball team rebounded from an extra innings loss to Fanshawe college and won their second ever OCAA medal.Â Assistant coach Matthew Ferreira is optimistic on their chances in the upcoming season, â€œThere are many building blocks which will be returning and the coaching staff will look to fill the holes that will be created by our graduating student-athletes.Â We are looking towards cultivating a championship culture in 2016, both on and off the field.â€ (Humber Hawks 2015-16 Season in Review)Â Make sure to get your tickets now if you wanna see the Hawks hit some homers!
In the 2015/2016 season; the womenâ€™s cross country program won an OCAA medal for their tenth consecutive season, and the menâ€™s program brought home the OCAA gold, good for the programâ€™s ninth OCAA team medal. Â Confident after a strong season last year the Cross Country program is poised for another successful season in 2016/2017.
